For those who aren't into hinduism, he is considered the god of new beginnings, wisdom and luck. His former head has been destroyed by his father Shiva because of a misunderstanding (I'm really doing a short summary), and then replaced with the head of an elephant. He seems to be worshiped by all Hindu denominations.
