"Be the Artist" i was told one day...and despite troubles on the path i persist to Be just that...-the "Artist".
also the process when u create Art yeh it appears you lose aspects but in truth nothing is ever lost....it only reconfigures to a diffrent form or state...your friend is not wrong but ultimetley it boils down to what You feel is right for you...i find amazing things happen when i dont think and i jus "Be"...thats when the Magic happens
