Description Termites are eusocial insects that belong to the Isoptera, an infraorder of the Blattodea (the order that also includes cockroaches).

They live in colonies that range in size from a few hundred individuals, to several million. Each colony consists of one or more breeding females (queens), breeding males (called kings), sterile females (workers and soldiers), and the offspring (eggs and nymphs) of the breeding individuals. Un-mated king and queen termites have wings, and leave the colony to find mates and start their own colonies.

As their name suggests, workers to most of the chores, gathering food and adding to the structure of the colony. Soldier termites are larger and more aggressive than the workers, with large and powerful jaws, and their job is to defend the colony from outside threats.

Like the unrelated bees, ants and wasps, termites communicate a variety of signals to each other. Although each individual termite has very little intelligent thought, when they work as a team, they form a kind of "swarm intelligence", where the combined efforts and reactions of the group as a whole cause the group to act like one large, thinking super-organism.

In some parts of the world (for example in parts of Africa and Australia), termites are famous for building large structures (called termite mounds) out of soil, clay and other raw materials. Some of these mounds can be up to a few metres in height, and the mounds themselves consist of the entrance and the ventilation system of the colony. Underneath the relatively small mound is a vast network of underground tunnels and chambers, some of which are used to grow fungus for food, some are for the queens to lay their eggs, some are nurseries where the workers raise the nymphs, and so on.

Termites eat mostly plant matter, such as grass or wood, although some also grow edible fungus in special underground garden chambers.

Termites are found in most parts of the world except Antarctica, Scandinavia and parts of northern Europe, and the northern polar regions.
