Rani and Nikolai headed up the group as they trotted across the grassy terrain, following the strong smell of a pack of young tokotas that had passed through here recently. Behind them was the tawny piebald Fenja, followed by the black female Kappa and Anathar the sphinx. Chicken Liver had once again taken up riding Anathar, finding that the belligerent oaf was much more agreeable now that he’d been put in his place. In fact, Rani might’ve gone to far as to say they’d become friends since Anathar had found out first hand that the lanky teenager was actually a worthy opponent. Crossbones was aboard Kappa this time, his white hair and fair skin in sharp contrast to her charcoal coat. All of them were eag

The chill that swept down Rani’s spine that morning had nothing to do with the cold. He watched as Jolly Roger loaded up the three young tokotas into the trailer, shadowed by their visitor: the mysterious woman named Grackle. This was usually Chicken Liver’s job, but he’d sequestered himself in his room ever since they’d returned from a very tense endurance ride about two days ago. The obstinate sphinx Anathar was first on the trailer. He only balked once before a deadly look from Roger sent him practically bounding the rest of the way in. Fenja, a tawny piebald, was next to board, and she did so with all the grace and majesty of an individual who knew exactly where they stood and how much they were worth. Rani observed the newest batch of youngsters with a critical eye, trying to decide who, if any of them, would cause him the most trouble. Beside him sat the old tundra Nikolai, who he knew would be doing exactly the same. Soon, they would be heading out on a three-hour endurance run with these three, something that tended to test tempers more than even hunting or fishing did. There were five of them altogether, though only three were being judged on the test this day. The humans who would start the timer and wait for their return were giving them a once over, checking the tack as well as the physical condition of the three test takers. Rani could see from their eyes alone that were robust and eager to run. 
The one who stood out to him the most was Anathar, a mid-sized, sand-colored sphinx mal
