Description m/09 Republic Special Service Ceremonial Sword. The sword is a reverse-handled tachi. The blade itself is the most important part of the sword: if a conscript or NCO gets promoted to officer grade, the saya, tsuba and tsuka are switched, but the blade stays the same. The blade has three inscriptions: "The Seraphim Order of the Senate and People of the Republic," the smith's name or seal and the name of the owner.

The owner of the blade traditionally gives a few pints of their own blood for the forging process of the blade. The Republic pays for the make of the blade, if it keeps a traditional alloy: high-strength steel with a nanocarbon weave. Wealthier members can make a blade out of even stronger alloys and metals: adamantium, mythril, black silver, military-grade metals and alloys, as long as there's at least some metal from the owner (e.g. iron from haemoglobin). By doing so, the weapon becomes a part of the owner, an extension of him/herself. The weapon becomes his life.

The tsuba is displayed next to the sword.
The gilded version is for officers and generals, while the silver one is for NCOs and conscripts.

This is worn with the dress uniforms (Full Dress , Special Full Dress([link] [link] [link] [link] ) and occasionally Parade Dress ).

===RENOVATION===

I redesigned my m/08 Tachi as part of my ongoing renovation project, using *Ronin-ink 's katana terms as a base.

Tachi are an older "version" of the katana. Many were longer than later katana blades. So they were cut to fit regulation, and later "tachi" were merely katana worn suspended from the belt edge down.
And the tachi is a cavalry blade, so the more familiar katana is easier to make and use, and any real remaining tachi are simply too old and valuable to use in any capacity any more.

Only cheap repros exist now in addition to the museum pieces.

Define, "cheap". Like 440 stainless display swords?
