Description This Antelope is checking out the valley from his view on the ridge. There were two bucks who were sparring off and on in the area.

Here is some interesting info on the species from Wikipedia.

[Antelope] can run exceptionally fast, being built for maximum predator evasion through running, and they are generally accepted to be the fastest land mammal in The New World, second in the world only to the Cheetah. It has a very large heart and lungs, and their hair is hollow.

Canon 5d. 75-300mm

Critiques welcomed.

I cannot properly articulate how much I love this picture.
I think it has much to do with the soft tones of it and the gracile pose of the antelope.

Instant fave!
And thanks for the additional info by the way!

i've read that they cannot jump fences, if and when they encounter them, and sometimes end up getting trapped

The sky in the background REALLY adds a LOT. The entire antelope appears to be backlit by the sky and yet the whole scene glows with detail! Is this an HDR? It is incredible.

If it's not an HDR, did you do anything special to get the detail in the sky such as the cloud detail?

Prong Horn are incredible creatures and are way over evolved for the current predators here...there existence points to some rather mean and nasty predators in the prehistoric past of North america.
We nearly lost this species to the barbed wire fence that they can not jump.

I've never thought about that, very good point. They're very fragile though. They break their legs often but with that kind of speed and stamina they always have a pretty good escape route. Fences though; they've been reported sliding under them at close to full speed, some western states are trying to implement fences without a bottom row, or putting "barbed-less" wiring on the bottom.

Cool animals.

I like how you research the things you shoot; you don't just take pictures and leave it at that.
