Description One painting of a series of three I did this past semester

The series is three portraits of people I know with popsicles, I wanted it to be kind of popy but photo realistic...

I FINALLY FINISHED THIS! yay! C:

I wasn't able to finish this last summer and I couldnt work on it while I was at school, but I finally was able to get a good block of time in and finish this today! yay!

This one was a bit more difficult because I used several different photo refrences and had to combine them in my head. I also changed the shirt and hair from the original painting, changed the color of the wall, and pretty much repainted everything. but it was a good learning experience as far as process goes

oil paint on canvas 22 x 18

that orange popsicle is driving me insane.
It looks so damn real compared to the rest. Is it what you want to be the focus of the piece? Because it really draws the eye in.
It looks like it's melting off your canvas. o___o

The shirt also came out really well.

I just wish her skin wasn't so flat, especially around the clavicle [that's my favorite part of humans!]

I think a lot of that is due to the photograph of the painting but this girl isnt super thin, so the collar bone isn't very defined in the first place but looking at the painting in real life I think the mid tones around it are a bit darker than the photo. I think the reason why the popsicle is so realistic is because of all the highlights, which in real life look much more painterly, it also could be that thats where my camera focused because a lot of highlights and detail in the hair got lost and it looks a bit soft foucused around the head and right side of the picture. I also noticed that my camera made a lot of places on the shirt appear to be lighter than what they are...its a hard judgement, and I wish I had a better documentaion set up :/

I have never touched oil paints? Are they hard to work with? You seem to have a handle on them! This series blows me away. The concept is playful and colorful. I love it. She's quite the popsicle whore, isn't she? I count 4 popsicles!! That's gonna be one mighty brainfreeze.

haha no she ate both of them...it sucked because I bought 3 boxes of popsicles and we had to eat them all right away...but luckily dinner was going on so I just went downstairs and offered everyone in the cafeteria a popsicle..and oil paint is really nice because it dries so much slower than acrylic its very useful, I'd suggest Winsor & Newton Winton oil paints if you're gonna start, they are pretty cheap for oil paint and the pigment is good but its still really thick and smooth, I'd say give it a try its well worth it at first its kinda awkward but once you get used to it you'll never want to go back to acrylic because the over all quality is so much better

p.s. I'd also suggest making a palette out of a piece of glass with white wood underneath it...that way you can just clean it with a razor blade and it makes life way more easier

"...however I feel the color in the skin isnt as rich as the other portraits in the series..."

Maybe it's because Kaelyn is so pale...

No really though, I think it's because of the black and the blue; those colors are very saturated and stand out more because of their depth. I agree with you about working on it more. This doesn't feel like a developed painting and I think it is missing the personality that is present in the version with Anna. The versions with Tyler and Kaelyn are much more painterly than Anna's (like you said), I think if you want to continue with that photo-realism you need to go back and work on them.

The faces, particularly the ear, needs definition as does the hair. The jaw line, mouth, and where the skin meets the popsicle are executed well and look good being painterly.

Ehhh... Well... I hope I've helped, I feel like I just told you stuff you already knew.

Ahhhhh! You made so much progress....and now I feel like such a slacker. But, Personally, I think you should add more detail to this one, and perhaps the one of Tyler, looking at the other two and especially the one of Anna this one especially dosen't feel finished yet. But then I really really love how you did the one of Anna...yup.

Hm. I really like all of them but this one lacks the most detail, which I see you covered. hah. But I think its a really good base, I would love to see it match the others though because i think the concept is really great for all of them, and as a set!

Great work over all!

If you were to do anything else to this I think you should do something to the hair, it seems to have less texture then the rest of the painting, but then I don't really know what the original photo looks like.

this one was tricky because the original photo was blurry!! so yeah theres a lot of defects with this one and I want to fix them...

A blurry photo? Well that's no good, but I have faith in your abilities to persevere.
