great drawing study!

some tips from a foundation year freshman:

with such nice craft paper providing a midtone, you should think about adding some highlights and some lowlights with white charcoal and 4b/6b charcoal pencils.

even if its from a photo, try to get a full figured reference to work from. the better the reference, the better the drawing because you will see more visual info to artistically render.

you have a great eye for proportions and light and shadow, so improve upon it with gesturing (drawing the form from inside out), then simplified geometric structure (get some bone structures worked out and sight-measure the body parts in relationship with other areas of the body, basing off a fixed size like the head), and finally draw super simplified with convex arch
es that intersect diagonally to see rhythmic flow (this term refers to the implied motion of the figure, the fleshing out/illusion of 3D).

finally, draw from life as much as possible. visual info is lost in a photo, and you don't have a sense the whole figure as a 3D object. gesturing allows you to draw through/inside the figure, to see more than the surface contour drawing. By gesturing a live pose in the first 1min or so, you have a underlying drawing that can be altered quickly. then do the steps to get geometric shapes and the convex arches.

work fast to get the general figure laid out, then work into details of the contour and light and shadow.

sorry for the burst of info,my figure illustration teacher is also an anatomy teacher...so its been a very valuable 5 weeks in school. I just noticed a few things you could work on based on your gallery and your 60 min study. Gesture, gesture, gesture.

my teacher also has a blogspot about drawing the figure: [link]

wow, what an amazing drawing. looks like one of those from old famous artists

a little suggestion though, the drawing 'screams' for some darker lines. it would be the best to add the contour, and only then add the tone. don't know if u understand what i mean, i think this should be a good example

the body contour is the most darkest there, gives more deep to the drawing

Yeah, I understand definately. I have always been a little, well, timid I guess with how dark I draw. I always feel, when I am crouched over the drawing, that it is too dark. Then I finish, back up and think "man, I can hardly see it".

Thanks for the input though, I will definately take it to heart.

Thanks!!

i had these problems too. but then once i learned that closer details are always the darkest. so if u're drawing a portrait, the nose should have a more darker contour, shadows and details then any other part
when u remember this it helps u not to make everything else too dark
