Description This is for the contest at called "Sherlock Holmes and me" (Edit: it got 3rd place, woohoo! didn't see it coming!)

I thought this would be a chance for me to tell people how I got into the Sherlock Holmes fandom.

It started when I was about 10 and my parents and I were going through old family photos. When we were looking at photos of a trip in London, I saw a photo of me (I was about 4) with two men in "funny costumes" (you have to forgive my 10-year old self). I asked my parents who they were.

My parents, haha, only knew their names. But as they wanted to encourage me to read, they got me a book about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson.

Right from A Study in Scarlet, I was hooked. I loved everything about the stories, Holmes' and Watson's characters, the adventures, the mysteries, the humor etc. etc. If you see from the cover of the book in the picture above, however, the book my parents bought me wasn't the complete canon. It started with A Study in Scarlet, and stopped at Memoirs! I was horrified when I read The Final Problem. I cried buckets! This was during the early 1990s, when the Internet was still not prevalent (and now you guys can guess how old I am), and like the readers during Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's time, I really thought that Holmes died.

It was maybe after a year when I was in a bookstore that I stumbled upon a volume called The Return of Sherlock Holmes. I grabbed it and got my mother to buy it and read it immediately and rejoiced to know that Holmes was alive.

Since then, I have read the entire canon and have been a fan since. I greatly enjoy the many adaptations out there (Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, Ronald Howard, Clive Merrison, Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch, just to name some), but I return to the books like an old friend. It might sound funny, but Holmes and Watson taught me many things growing up.

If I ever have a chance to go to London again, I will stop at 221B Baker Street. In my imagination, I will knock on the door, with that old photograph in my hands, and I will get excited when I hear the door open. Holmes and Watson, the immortal characters, will welcome me as a visitor and we will get on, they in their "funny costumes" and I in my weird modern clothes.

It's fun to imagine.

The pictures of Holmes and Watson are taken from those drawn by Signey Paget and they are how I visualize them.

That's a wonderful story! And I love the drawings where you're reading the books and reacting to what's going on.

Wow, that is really sweet. I can't imagine all the ways people found out about Sherlock Holmes. I was about 12 years old when I started reading the stories.

Oh, you too! I thought that was only me! I had a book that was the Adventures and Memoirs stuck together. And I readΒ The Final Problem and I was furious! I basically shoved the book back on the shelf and moped around the house for the next week or more. I didn'tΒ touch the book for years because I was still so mad.Β I pretty much just read whatever I could find in those days (still do), and my parents weren't really big readers so I had no one to tell me that there was more!

Then, of course, what happened was pretty much the same as you. The bookstore (second-hand), spotting The Return, reading it and having to resist the temptation to dance around the house shouting "HE'S ALIVE!!"

Wonder if the editors who compiled the stories go, "Let's ruin the readers mwahaha". Lol. My favorite thing about the Internet is how people can gather to share their interests and stories. Thanks for sharing your story here.

I'm pretty sure that must be it. Those gosh-darn editors!

And no problem!
