Description On a daily basis we are forced to mask our true identities to conform to society; we put on our costumes and play our part in the world. In this painting I investigate the notion of split-personalities which we may hide from others and modify in order to please others, appear ‘normal’ or to make a living. I tried to capture the connection between ones physical appearance and their private world and personality. I used a few of the things in my life which make me unique, e.g. costume design, the accordion, the things that I usually hide. The hand holding the mask is a reference to revealing yourself, letting go, accepting and opening up.

There was some inspiration from Gustave Klimt. I love his figures and how they are intertwined in these beautifully patterned spaces, also his use of gold leaf and jewels. If you look closely you can see I used gold enamel on the goggles, necklace and corset busk to add a different element.

The goggles (which I used my own handmade goggles as a reference [link] ) and clock link to my new interest in steampunk, as well as the gears that are throughout the background as an extension from the necklace, which was given to me by a dear friend of mine. The corset and mask I also made myself. [link]
The branches have been a part of a theme I’ve been exploring for a long time. A quick look through my gallery, and I’m sure you’ll see.
I started this painting about August, 2012, for the Hume Building Society Acquisitive Contemporary Art Award. To my surprise, I was accepted! Having my work accepted into this show was the biggest thing so far in my artistic career! It was such a privilege to have my painting hung next to all these successful artists.

The show went from 16th November until the 15th December 2012. Although I didn’t win anything, it was a great experience and the exposure has been great.
60cm x 155cm, collaged tissue paper, acrylic and gold enamel on canvas.

Some critique is welcome.
