Description Someone asked about this so here's the short and long answer. Plus I've not seen a really decent AL tutorial so this one fills in some of the knowledge gap.

If you want Miku's studio light to mess with, it's in the zip file accompanying this tutorial (top right d/l button).

Cheers.

Just try it and find out. Should work on most contemporary PCs.

I found this and another tutorial rather helplful so thank you. There's one part I'm stuck with though. Whenever I see other people use autoluminous, the parts light up and they seem to move along with the character in real-time...like they don't lag behind and leave a 'streak' or anything. How do I do this? Every time I try to use this effect the lights leave streaky blurs behind. I thought setting the blur to 0 would help but that just turns off the light completely, and setting it really low doesn't help but decrease how bright the light is, any advice?

1/. Make sure you have the latest version - version 4. I had the same problem with older versions.
2/. If it still does the same thing then one of two things may be happening (or both):

a. The effect and your graphics card don't jive
b. Your PC isn't fast enough

Incidentally, a good alternative to Auto Luminous is Object Luminous.

Old version was it apparently, thank you very much. I'd feel really stupid but finding the downloads for these effects on sites I can't understand makes my mistake understandable . I got a new one and got it working near instantly! yay, thanks again.

The panel describing the XYZ/etc settings is perfect. I'd thought fluctuating waves was something that had to be manually set. Thanks!

This [and the somewhat cryptic (at the time) note I got from you asking me if my AL was working ok] made me go back and recheck materials settings to troubleshoot why Rhythm Miku wasn't responding properly to AutoLuminous4.

The thing is, I didn't catch it previously due to failing eyesight (happens with age - meh...) not allowing me to see the numbers at a glance - instead, I saw the color box, it looked black enough to be set right, so I left it alone.
And AL didn't work. >_<
After reading this, I went back in and checked more closely. Sure enough, even though I had her reflection intensities set properly to 110, her reflection color settings were off. They were set to 0.1 instead of 0. AL will not recognize anything but 0 RGB as its base trigger, so naturally she didn't respond to it - GIGO by definition. I went to work.

Repaired, tested, functioning. Mission accomplished.

I've since updated the Primary DL and the special Chibi version of her (might want to grab her one more time - sorry about all her updates... >_< ).

Thanks so much for this. ^_^

*Edit: I also didn't know about the AL plugin for PMDe that comes with it - after going through all the folders I finally found and installed it (I have yet to use it), so thanks for that tip as well.

As an aside, be careful with the ALsetter plugin - make sure you're working on a copy of whatever model you're messing with as it can really screw up the AL settings and there's no way (that I found) to undo whatever it is that was messed up.

Ah, thanks for that - it's good to have a headsup about a potentially touchy plugin. I still have yet to use it, so I'll definitely keep that in mind.

When I did my GLaDOS edit I screwed up too. But that's partly because there was no way for me to test AL as it natively doesn't run on my system. However, I found out by accident that AutoLuminousBasic work and automatically illuminates stuff too if I do a 'certain something' first. Computers can be really weird at times ... ><

Out of curiosity, what's the difference between the polygon and material trigger level?

Trackdancer In reply to larkal [2014-12-07 20:41:30 +0000 UTC]

Other than the triggering method, none. Visually looks the same.

Hi,

When dealing with AutoLuminous, I get a not always welcome side effect - many (if not all) particle-based MME effects (like Self-Burning, NormalBeam, etc.) increase their brightness significantly. With AL-ready models, I can choose which one has to shine and which hasn't, by deselecting them in MME panel, but those MMEs don't seem to have a way to control it (not to my knowledge, that is). Would you know how to avoid that?

Thanks.

Have you tried the Si and Tr controls?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KillerBeer01 In reply to Trackdancer [2014-12-07 21:43:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes, with no visible changes (unlike AL itself, of course, in *that* one controls work).

Trackdancer In reply to KillerBeer01 [2014-12-07 21:56:40 +0000 UTC]

You might have to end up editing the controlling variables directly in the fx files.

Which version of AL are you using? I run into that problem sometimes too with version 4 and while I don't know what the cause is, I can fix the problem by adding the "LightSampling" effect that can be found in the "Options" folder.

KillerBeer01 In reply to larkal [2014-12-07 11:00:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm on 4 as well. What do you do with LightSampling? When I tried to add it to my existing scene, it didn't produce any visible reaction, nor editing its Si/Tr parameters did. The Japanese readme suggests that the order of effects may determine which effect is influenced (as much as I can understand Google Translate ), but in my case, reshuffling effects in "backgrounds->accessories edit" didn't do anything as well. Maybe I got the instruction wrong, though.

larkal In reply to KillerBeer01 [2014-12-10 08:42:17 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply. I just drag and drop or load the "LightSampling.x" file into MMD and it fixes the problem. Have you tried some sort of side-by-side? If you still aren't getting any results, your computer may not be able to use the LightSampling effect just like Trackdancer's can't handle the regular AutoLuminous.

This is super helpful, I've always wondered how to do that. Do you have a dl for AL with the plugins? I think I have a super old version of AL

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to MissingPixieSticks [2014-12-05 20:40:00 +0000 UTC]

You should be able to find a d/l for AutoLuminous 4 on VPVP or Bowlroll.net.

At least you can run the whole effect - I'm stuck with it in it's most basic form

That sucks, is it that you're computer isn't powerful enough?

I love AL, it became one of my fav effects after seeing the stages produced by Damieko, though I'm not sure what's happened to them now ... :/

Trackdancer In reply to MissingPixieSticks [2014-12-05 22:28:04 +0000 UTC]

My laptop dates back to 2006. It's still going strong, but it won't support some of the newer effects, but there's no sense in buying a new system just to play a free game.

That's pretty impressive to be fair. My lappy's only 4 years old and I'm already considering upgrading (because I want something more powerful, and possible strong enough to run two screen easily, mine bitches quite a bit if I set the 2nd screen up)
