To clear things up, I work at a cat hospital and here's the lay down on rule of thumbs:
gray cats are very emotional
calico/tortishell cats are always female. there -are- males, but they have both sexual organs and are sterile (this is very much the case in any [perhaps all?] male calico/tortis).
orange cats are more than likely male and it's rare for them to be female. the reasoning I'm unsure of, but that's how it goes!
and white cats have a lot of eye problems (they tend to go blind more than the rest) and issues arise with allergies.
this is a very adorable kitten, though!

from what I know most orange cats are male, but the only way I could tell for sure without actually being with the cat is if it's fur was three different colors, because it's genetically impossible for a male cat to be three colors. but as this one is two colors it could be either gender

Calico cats usually are female because of the type of gene it is. It's a gene that's the opposite for orange cats. Meaning orange cats are normally male. Here's something else strange; white cats normally have mental disabilities because having pure white fur is actually a defect. :/ Makes it sound like a toy.

you gotta check the uhm thingie. if it's a little close to the butthole, it's a female. calico cat both has black and orange color. who for sure is a female. white is like the default color. if you don't inherit any color from parents, cat becomes white. or something like that.
