Description
A group of characters who've been around in one incarnation or another for a long while, but who I never seem to have time for. I started listening to some jazz while working on something else, though, and this happened instead. I had way more fun painting this than anyone should ever be allowed to have. Ever. This means I may have to do more. It'd be a shamelessly self-indulgent project, but that's never stopped me before. Zoot suits and tommy guns. Whee.Related content

This is definitely the scariest I have seen of Freckle. He totally looks like a psychopath here. Lol
That's the reason why I love his character so much, he can be cute one moment then be deadly the next.

Hey... I'm a huge fan of Lackadaisy, and I happen to be doing a documentary about gangsters in the 1920s and 1930s. I was wondering if you'd be opposed to my using this fantastic piece of artwork as my end-slide? Credit would be given, of course.

I think this incorporates all the major visual themes of the time: zoot suits, trench coats, tommy guns, and girls with feather bolas and those long cigarette things.
I've heard a lot about your comics, and I figure it's about time I take a look. So far, I like what I see!

So I just went backwards through your whole lackadaisy gallery....and I got increasingly amazed. NOt just at the comic (although that is truly incredible) but at how long the comic had been building up and the amount of depth and detail that went into it.. some of which I'm sure I can't even imagine. But what struck me is that when I read the last few pages or so, it seemed like I had come into the middle of something. And that's what I liked. You just jumped into the character's lives, and there's just so many things that make it realistic....how they all know eachother, their wierd little quirks, their attitudes, everything! And I got to see how Freckle and Pepper meet. And I love how theres always a little bit of mystery surrounding the characters too, and you wonder how they ended up where they are today...or back in the 1920s. XD
HOLY COW long comment. Buuuut if you read this, I love your comic, and I have the same trouble with finding time to do art/writing in general. But yeah. I really hope you keep up with the comic and I love the in-depth and highly-detailed/researched storyline.

You know what, as impressive as this is, I can see so much improvement between this piece and your later Lackadaisy works. You're more adept at detail placement, for instance, and the characters have become ever more likeable as your style has solidified.
You are awesome because even though you know so much about art and illustration, you continue to refine and improve. Don't ever stop!

Great stuff, love your work. You know the tommy gun cat kinda reminds me of the Mad Hatter with that card in his hat and the zoot suit cat reminds me of the Cheshire Cat with that smile. Have you ever thought of doing an "Alice in Wonderland" pic?

Funny, really, how a simple idea while listening to Jazz evolved into what became Lackadaisy.
Not that im exactly complaining, that is. Heh
And, currently, this is still my favorite of any of you Lackadaisy based works outside of the strips. Nothing says 1920's more then Zoot Suits and Tommy Guns. Much like the expressions on Rocky and Freckles faces are the perfect example of complete and utter Lunacy.
