The big reason majority prefer Zero is becauseΒ Some people are capable of sensing the spark in their relationship ignited when Zero attempted to kiss Yuuki. Moreover, Zero has established a closer relationship with Yuuki (and is closer to her physical age), who was there for him when he was recovering from the loss of his family (except Ichiru). She generated the warmth that Zero needed and craved during that time while also giving him the mothering love that he desperately needed. Personally, I strongly believed that Zero always harboured feelings for Yuuki that surpassed close friendship. However, he suppressed his feelings for Yuuki when he became aware of her attraction towards Kaname and decided it would be in her best interest to pushed himself away from her.
Yuuki's relationship with Kaname started when he saved her from that blood thirsty vampire that snowy, winter night when she began to suffered from ameisia. Her love or admiration for him is due to the fact that she owes him her life. Kaname regularly paid visits to Yuuki and treated her like a little sister. However, what is more shocking, is that Kaname is Yuuki's older brother (if you continue reading, things are cleared up and everything is not as messed up as originally perceived. Slightly...)- making Yuuki a pureblood by default. When Kaname feels as though it is time, he unveils to Yuuki that they were suppose to be married. They then leave the academy and begin a new life together.
Another reason as to why fans prefer Zero over Kaname is due to the way he treats her. In particular, how at a early stage in the story, Kaname had desire to drink Yuuki's blood and bring her back to the blood tainted life of a vampire which Juuri didn't want for her daughter. Juuri wanted her daughter to have a normal human life and to be able to smile like a human, an opportunity she was never given. And finally, when the readers find out Kaname's true reason for keeping Zero alive was for Yuuki's sake and to manipulate Zero as a pawn in his chess game, where he is the clear winner. Kaname is selfish, and generally only thinks of himself- the only exception being Yuuki (his blushing bride), as he doesn't trust anyone since his parents were murdered. He even adopted a new personality and behaviour after that life changing event.

Hello.
I think this eternal war exist and will exist in fandom. In my opinion this issue of what opinions and look at the world we have, so I will only add a few thoughts and end this conversation.
No doubt I can say that these arguments don't convince me. For thousands years, Kaname was modest and hard-working. Then, so to speak, he wasn't able to "attack" he only waited, so as a result he didn't achieve certain goals in past. Later fortunately he learned it. The motivation was a girl whom he could finally see not as a ghost from the battlefield, who captivated him so much that it's his only memory right now, too strong to erase, but as a living being. He was ready to die already then. He decided that the "leftovers" which he was, he will devoted exclusively to her, even though he often felt unhappy because of this. He sacrificed his own happiness, his own rules, a life, to create a new world for her, deprived of everything that could threaten her. No doubt it was such a strong love that it was crazy and obsessive. However, exactly this kind of love is the most incredible for me. Despite his tendency to manipulate, he didn't consider himself to be someone special. On the contrary, he considered himself as a trash. He was also ready for objection from others' side and respected a persons like this and their decisions (eg. Ichijou)
If he was an egoist of character, he would be always like this, and not only for the last 5 years of life, while for the previous 9995 he was someone completely different. (I don't say "10 years" because before he created his plan, and after he lost Yuuki, he still was just like in a past. Only little more closed.) It's quite a meaningful fact. He saved Aidou's father, imitating his death, while he was alive, he helped people, hunters and foster-parents, who accepted him as their own son.
That they are siblings? I love this fact! It doesn't bother me at all. That he wanted Yuuki's blood when that after thousands years, he finally met the embodiment of that beautiful apparition, to soon lose her and not be able to approach it like others? On his place I would be going crazy! This is called "irresistible lust". Passion, which is almost like a forest fire, is one of the greatest advantages in their relationship. Although it made them both felt that they could hurt each other, so to avoid doing so, they chose to escape, at the end of the series they were reconciled in one moment. They were both in love with each other as a children, as a human and a vampire and as a two adult vampires. This has never changed, regardless of circumstances, even after 1000 years of separation, when in the last chapter Yuuki says to Kaname "Aisuru anata" which is the strongest confession of love that Japan knows (like "Aishiteru", which Kaname said to Yuuki).
Kaname made a few mistakes, but it's easy to explain their source. Examine the feelings of people who are the highest in the hierarchy, living from the point of view of power positions, under constant pressure, having the wrong belief that only they should save the world, others don't. Deep depression, low self-esteem, obsessive states, numerous traumas, internal burn-out caused by an absurdly long life (I'm after studies from the social analyst/psychology, so I could say about it until tomorrow xd ^^) All this resulted, although he was still able to recover from all these elements, because, unlike eg. Rido, Kaname still had the ability to self-reflection. He has a lot of advantages and in the past he was undoubtedly a great king. Now as a human, he once again shows how much goodness he has inside. That's why I choose him.
I don't hate Zero. But he's colorless, not interesting. The development of his character is only after he loses his memory, which makes one think that if he would never lost his memories, he would wait for Yuuki for eternity instead of try to fighting for her.

This SO true for every teenage heart throb book out there. Their is ALWAYS a jerkface and ALWAYS saint of a guy that ANY girl in their right mind would grab and never let go of. But it looks like NONE of the girls in ANYTHING are in their right mind so the chose the jerkface and the nice guy STILL is always there for them and says its ok that the girl ripped their heart out. It is a pattern is all human tales.

Hey why are you all Hating on Kaname when it's not really him? *Spoiler alert* Kaname is possessed by his grandfather/anssestor.
So its not the real Kaname people are hating, but the spirit that is possessing him. Now Im not a big Kaname fan, but nor am I a hater I just think you guys are just a little to harsh on Khim and too soft on Zero (Who I find annoying) *Ducks and dodges bullets and knives* and Yuuki, well she's just annoying somewhat/pointless character.

HOLY... I bow down to you even though I made a promise to myself to never bow down to anyone but this is... I dont know what to call it, its beautiful and so right.
It kills me to see this but if I dont it pains me so much to not look at it and know that this is one of the unfair parts of loving someone. It hurts to know and pertend not to know then letting them know that you know. It sorta reminds me of one of my ex-boyfriends who liked every girl in the whole grade. Before he was like that though I liked him cause my friend told me about him and told me everything there is to know about him, and in the end I liked him before I even met him.when it came to my turn to be with him (even though I was one of the first ones) I didnt hesitate to say yes and I knew it wouldn't last long. Not with him. It actully lasted longer then I expected. It went on for over a year. Over the summer we called almost everyday then one day nothing. I went back to school and found out that he was with some other girl that was new that year. He never broke up with me and so pretty much he was cheating on me. I delt with it thinking that he would be back but he never came. He didn't even talk to me so I figured that that was his way of breaking up with me. I liked him for years after that, finally when I finally gave up on him and desided to move on I was asked out and the boy that asked me was cute and kind so I knew. Me and him where happy for a couple months but the thing is he didn't talk to me that much or was even around me. He texted me but never talked to me. During that summer close to the end just like with the other one he just stopped texting me, which that made me worry and so I paniced. I found out a couple days later that one of my best friends that is a guy liked me and I lost it and I couldnt help but like him back not as much as any of the others worried that it would be the same. So I broke up with the second one and it turns out that that was the best choice. He is now mean and the total opposite of the one before. Now I am with my best friend and it turns out that he is best friends with my first ex so its a big circle.
But anyway I got carried away and told about all the other boyfriends I had when I only need to tell about the first one.
Well anyway it reminds me of him in a good way. It makes me realize I needed to learn to say now and listen to my gut instead of my head.
I knew he would leave but I didnt care and I got hurt while doing that so I guess thats why I love this anime so much cause I can relate to it.
Any way didn't mean to bring you down or what ever.
