The musings of a mechanical lifeform. Never thought I'd see the day.

I'm the kind of person who believe if a machine can feel emotions, emulated or not, that the machine has a soul. If you believe you're alive, then by all rights, you are. If you fight for what you believe in, if you protect the ones you love not just out of some sense of duty or some hard-coded programming but because it's the right thing to do, then that's as human as you can ever be.

Did Rock Volnutt ever give up the fight against Juno or Sera because he wasn't human? No. The time he had spent with his family going on adventures and digging out ruins to make a living had shaped him to be the man he was at that instant, fighting for the sake of his people.

There will be those who will look down upon you. Those who see only servos, wiring, nanotechnology... Those people are blinded by hate and prejudice. They will try their hardest to dig into your soul, to make you feel as worthless as them, but fear not. Within your heart lies a perfect soul, untouched by such petty darkness. I hope they never win.

So don't let them.

in my opinion, if you're able to question you're very being, and pursue that question, then you already have you're answer.

in the words of René Descartes: "Je pense donc je suis" --> "I think, therefore I am"; its just as valid applied to AI's, as it is to Humans.

and really? whats in the soul anyways? as much as some people may argue to the contrary, every human starts life with their own form of programming, its called instincts, and without them a human baby would essentially be brain dead at birth, as it would have no idea whatsoever as how to initially react to the world around it, and those biological instincts continue to be an important influence on individuals through out their lives, and through experience they become able to ignore them.

Let's run an example scenario for you.
Let's say you're at the store and you see five different brands of ketchup and/or catsup. Of the five, is there one that you prefer over the others? Do you buy the one with the lowest price even if it has the worst flavor? Do you guy the most expensive gourmet condiment because it's the most flavorful? Do you just grab one at random? Do you even stop to consider all the factors before you buy one?

Let's run another example scenario. A friend's birthday is coming up and they've expressed interest in more than one item, perhaps even going as far as to hint that they'd like it as a gift. Which item do you get? Would you get the most expensive, but run the risk of looking like a jerk for buying something so pricey? Would you buy the cheapest, but run the risk of disappointing your friend? Would you go the middle-ground again, playing it safe?

Let's run yet another example scenario. Do you blush when I do this? *cups her cheek and looks her in the eyes* What may have started out as a simple AI program quickly learned from the world around it and blossomed into a genuine, honest-to-goodness lifeform. You can argue because you don't need to eat, breathe, or sleep (in a conventional way) that you aren't alive, but there's a great many people who would aruge that if you can think so deeply, debate, feel emotion to cry, or even love, on multiple levels much less the "traditional" kind of love...that you're alive. Even failing that, you're alive to your friends.

I think what I'm trying to say here is "Don't think too hard. Your head will explode." *grin*
