Description This fellow emerged from some sort of cocoon. I took some pictures before he got his bearings and jumped away. Check out his amazing rainbow eyes!

What do you suppose he might be? A baby praying mantis, perhaps? I'd love your thoughts!

As *PixelBlender Commented already, this is not a praying mantis but a mantis-fly, they belong to a family of insects called Mantispidae. They're not actually related to one another at all, the identical arms are a result of convergent evolution - something was so good for the niche the animals specialised in they evolved separately multiple times.

Anyway, insect classification aside, this is a beautiful picture. The eyes are so vibrant and detailed, and I love the crispness of the edge of the wing!

This is a Mantid Fly. Even though it resembles a Praying Mantis, they are completely different species. Strange how two completely different creatures end up looking so alike!
