Description Mandala of the Prima Materia
Metallic gel pens and acrylic paint

"Prima Materia" - Latin - This is an alchemical term that describes the most fundamental, primordial elements of nature within a sea of chaos that connect to form all types of matter. These elements are not literal, however, which is a big reason why alchemy is scoffed at as nonsense. These elements together at this base level constitute what is known as the 5th element, or quintessence, and is necessary for comprehending at the beginning stages of forming the Philosopher's Stone.

The Prima Materia exists eternally in a timeless dimension coinciding with our own, and is brought into existence through infinite possible forms through consciousness. Mercury represents the Great Messenger of the unseen energies that drive life, thought and perception, from the masculine and feminine sources (solar and lunar). Mercury is seen symbolized in ancient cultures all over the planet and goes by many names including Hermes, Thoth, Moses, Mary, Krishna and Christ, depending on the aspect of Mercury being described in the alchemical allegory. In one of the trinities of alchemy, Mercury, Sulphur and Salt combine as the Soul, Spirit and Body, respectively.

"A beneficent fluid bathes us, whence we draw the very force to labor and to live. From this ocean of life, in which we are immersed, we are continually drawing something, and we feel that our Being--or at least the intellect that guides it--has been formed therein by a kind of local concentration." -Unknown Alchemical Author
