Mouse painting in Paint Shop Pro over a sketch. 10 hours. Completed early January.I actually drew this several months ago but I couldn't come up with a good reason for that strange pose. The other week the idea of making it a third in my Eternal series [link] (I came up with that just now) which consists of Evan casting all kinds of magic. I've already done fire and lightning. I guess this one is light magic. I'm not even sure anymore.
Anyone would think that Evan can actually use magic at this rate... btw, that's not the sun above him; it's his magical ball thingo

How long did it take you to do the pic from start to finish?

Short answer: about 10 hours.
Long answer: I started it back in August; it was primarily done as an anatomical exercise (but mostly fails in that regard). It was a drawing of perhaps an hour's worth back then -- possibly two. Then, late December, I got the idea to make him casting magic, so I scanned it and worked on it for at least another eight or nine hours, putting the total up around 10. But it took five months to go from the original idea to a completed image

Hm, lets see... I like how light from his fists looks like smoke, or drawing power from the sun. The use of yellow makes it very warm almost like he is protecting something...
I can't find much to critique though sorry... Maybe just the position of the sun is a little confusing with the shadows, it seems like the light is above him but the sun is behind.

I didn't think your Evan was the magical type, but he pulls off the look well in this piece.
If I pick (as I do) my favourite little detail, it'd be the single gauntled on his right hand. It glints nicely in the golden light.

This is fabulous, it's a very strong piece. When I look at it I get a sense that the character is seeking an inner strength to get his magical power, so concentrated and poised. I admit when I first looked at the piece before I read your artist's comments I thought he might have been gathering his power from the sun, however since you said it was a magical orb I will assume he is calling it forth... but for what I cannot guess
