Description
“Revenge is a dish best served cold.” A resonating line that ran in the mind of Phyre Frost as she made her way to the Guardian archives to read the files on Panthera. She found herself doing so after her adventure with Amazonia, in part to understand why the Goddess of Justice died back in 1987. The report read long on the former villainess who had caused havoc over the past 50 years of her existence. Her run ins were a who's who of former Protectors ranging from Amazonia to Doc Valiant, The Black Spider, and countless interludes with Patrick Noir. The latter compared her to a friend that had lost her mind to a curse, An evil that had entered into her very soul and strangled out all her humanity. More fitting than the psychotic bitch who would murder for any high priced bauble, as the Black Spider summarized about her. Doc Valiant was more direct when he concluded that from 1950 on, she was consumed by hatred of the person she could never be: Amazonia. She was her opposite but in the end, she would justify this envy as reason enough to destroy her at any cost. That life was not worth living after Amazonia was destroyed, but she had to be the one to destroy her. As she read, Angelina entered and approached the Guardian who was deep into reading the report. She paused a moment before she spoke.

“I sense you have questions.” she states. That caught Phyre Frost off guard as she turned to see the Angelic Guardian.

“Didn't notice you entering.” she replies somewhat stunned.

“I apologize if I startled you. I just sense your curiosity.”

“More like an interest. It seems Amazonia would sacrifice herself for the good of all no matter what the sacrifice.”

“Yes. Her adventures have always had her in harm’s way to protect others.”

Maddie nods as she turns to continue reading. “Surely she must knew of Panthera's hatred of her.”

“Yes, but that report does not tell you what you need to know.”

Maddie was confused by this as she turned to her again. “It's pretty complete. Several Protectors have shown her to be pretty much insane from her contact with the Jade of Balma.”

“Yes, but there is nothing from Amazonia in that report.”

“Yes, I notice that...I wonder why not?”

“Because she never considered her a villain. To Amazonia, she was a victim.” Maddie seemed confused by her statement as she continued. “Maria Rodriguez was much like Amazonia, a woman that was living in man’s world, and she was succeeding until she found the cursed jade. It was her curiosity that was taken advantage of, and she became a nocturnal monster who feeds on wealth and greed.”

Maddie was still a bit confused by her statement. “Sounds like a villain to me.”

“Her soul was taken, and she did imprison it in the stone, but she had already tainted her mind. Like a moth drawn to fire, it was inevitable that one day Maria would get the Jade and complete her transformation into Panthera. Amazonia believed she failed to save her, and it is that reason in the end it was destined to end in Amazonia's death.”

“How is that?”

Angelina's calm and warm face paused before continuing. “Amazonia deflected the first bullet...it would strike and kill Panthera...Amazonia could not stop that from happening, and in her heart and mind she saw it as she herself killed a victim.”

Maddie seemed astonished, “You mean...she took that second bullet?”

“That, I doubt, but she knew for the first time since she came to Angel Falls that a victim had died and she could not save her.”

Maddie now understood as she looked at the image of Panthera and pondered a bit. “Yes, but Amazonia is still here...does this mean there is another Panthera?”

“Time will tell Maddie....time will tell.”
