No problem. I see that the minis are your thing, but have you ever considered making a full sized one?

I've been thinking about it. I just haven't had the time lately. And I don't know if I should use colored clay like I do now, or use super sculpey and paint it. I'm not a very good painter and i don't even know how to start painting one of those. You and some other artists on here have been really great inspiration for me. Hopefully after the holiday rush with my etsy shop I can have a break and try a full sized pony!

Well I hope you do and take it from someone that started out with Super Sculpey and paint and moved on to colored clay... i can tell you to not even consider Super Sculpey. Once I changed to colored clay, I only use uncolored sculpey if I have to or if it is a large object that I have to paint. Other than that I only use colored clay. Painting will only make a sculpture look bad. The paints get clumpy and double the amount of time it takes. Stick with the color like you are now

Very awesome! At least I already have practice with the eyes. I don't think I could sculpt the eyes. When painting the eyes I just thin out the paint with a little bit of water, it helps with the clumping. And I love buying the colored clay! Not the yucky beige.

Yeah, water is important with the paint and helps a lot! I never buy Super Sculpey anymore but sometimes I still buy original white Sculpey which is even worse. I buy it because some of my sculptures are quite large and require a lot of clay that will be painted over (like a base) so it doesn't matter the color and it is much cheaper. I hate it though because it is as soft as butter and ALWAYS requires leeching before it is usable!

Yeah, I am no fan of Scupley 3, it is either WAY too soft, or ROCK hard. Premo and Fimo are more consistent in being ready to work. I guess if you don't want to keep leeching the sculpey you could save all of your scrap clay and paint over that? But odds of having THAT much scrap isn't very likely.

MadPonyScientist In reply to TrenoNights [2012-11-30 19:36:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, when you use as much clay as i do, it takes more than scrap! I don't like ANY of the companies that make polymer clay! I do have better luck with Premo and Fimo but the colors I need aren't always available so I have to use Sculpey III. Even then, there are plenty of times when I have bought Premo and Fimo and they have been inconsistent as well. These companies just seem to have no quality control. I almost dread buying regular yellow in Sculpey III because it is almost always so soft that it is barely usable. I imagine the soft clay wouldn't be as much of a bother on the pieces you make in that they are small and you might not have to handle the clay as long but on a full size pony, sometimes I am handling it for 10 hours! but, as much as i complain, polymer clay is still better than regular clay!!!

I agree. I totally understand, I may not be holding it for a long time. But one time I made a Twilight Sparkle, and the purple was really soft and i was being lazy and I didn't want to leech. So I went through the whole frustration of her squishing in my fingers, she was o.k. But when I baked her, she squished almost flat. So she looks like she is taking a bow. lol I know sometimes it can depend on the supplier. I notice that Michaels clay selection tends to be softer, but at hobby lobby its usually perfect. It's a shame it's such a finicky medium to work with.

Well around here the craft stores are about the same. You don't have that squishing problem so much when making the full size ponies because i realized a long time ago that a wire armature is a MUST! Otherwise they will never look right and lately I have developed a new technique for baking some of my ponies to where they never touch anything at all while they are baking so gravity and squishing is not an issue I just looked through the rest of your gallery by the way and you have some really adorable pieces in there!!! I wish I could make minis that looked that good

It must be pretty crazy to see ponies floating in your oven lol. I'm sure minis wouldn't be much of a problem for you. Although with some things I think my eye sight has gotten worse from straining trying to get tiny details. haha, I need to invest in a magnifying glass.

You sound like me! I have been straining my eyes too and they HAVE gotten worse from all the eyes and cutie marks and trying to get perfect edges. As for making minis, I'm not very good at it. My fingers are too big. The smallest pony I made was about the size of a quarter and didn't look that good. It was the Derpy that was in my Derpy snowglobe.

TrenoNights In reply to MadPonyScientist [2012-12-01 07:28:29 +0000 UTC]

I like the derpy snow globe! I think what I like about doing miniature is that I can alter how something looks. Make something chibi instead of completely accurate. Because if I made bigger ponies, I would make them completely different than the small ones that I make. Mini pokemon is my next battle. After Christmas, I'll be preparing for a convention, so I really want to have A LOT of stuff. So Pokemon is so next on my list.

MadPonyScientist In reply to TrenoNights [2012-12-02 01:47:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I can see how that would be good with the minis. People don't like mine when I change them. I noticed someone on here that has recently started sculpting a bunch of ponies and I feel a little bit bad for them. They have exaggerated the upturned nose on the ponies to the point where the nose looks like a banana. And maybe they are trying to create their own style that is different from the rest of us, unfortunately, peole like their ponies to look like ponies so the views this person is getting is next to nothing. With minis, people expect them to look like chibi ponies because they are so small and it is okay, but to take a full size one and give it a banana looking nose will never gain the admiration of the community.

I know! It was so hard to get all of them in a shot period. I wasn't 100% satisfied, but I went with what I had. Here is the link for the individual RD. I've made her a few more times and have gotten her to look much better. But I haven't been able to rephotograph just yet. [link]

And Thanks!

Yeah, I did find her, but thanks for the link! :3
You should definitely post updated pictures when you get the chance, especially if you've improved.

I will soon. All the ones I have remade were shipped out and I didn't have time to rephotograph. But I will be preparing for a con soon, so there will be plenty of Rainbow Dash to go around.

these are really cute, were they hard to make?

TrenoNights In reply to Trainer-Dax [2012-11-05 03:42:44 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! It took be several months before I actually got a style I was satisfied with. I wanted a chibi, but it still retain everything about the full ponies. So yes they were hard to get right, but the more I make them, the easier they get.
