Description 1:4 scale headsculpt sculpted for Sideshow Collectibles. Black Widow from Iron Man 2.

This was a lot of fun, though the hair was quite a challenge.

Sculpted in wax. Pupils were just scribed in for photos

Thanks for looking!

Excellent work. Are Sideshow going to use this portrait?

Thanks! She was part of Sideshow's first Black Widow PF many years ago....It must have been back when Iron Man 2 was released.

Have always admired your work with Sideshow.
This is so Scarlet.
Did you sculpt her in wax from the start?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to martinjohnborja [2015-08-18 02:23:07 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! So happy you like it.
I did sculpt her from wax from the start. I sometimes do a clay rough, but since you have to make a quick mold, sometimes it's not really all that helpful for me...most of these pieces are small, so roughing in a wax piece isn't that time intense.

Another stunning job! I'm wondering whether you ever get any feedback from the people whose likeness you capture so well.

Thanks!
It's rare to hear anything from the actors that portray these characters. Most of the approvals come from the studios that own the licenses for the movies. In some cases, the actors get to approve their stuff, like the Lord of the Rings folks.

I doubt Scarlett has seen this.
Thanks,
Trev

That's a shame that she might not have seen it. It looks like the cast of Serenity loved the head sculpts you made of them though. Congrats!

damn man, you are one sick talent!!! I wish I lived closer to ya so I could pick your brain on this wax stuff cause I sure as hell cant get these kind of results haha. *bows down* too good man too good!

TrevorGrove In reply to PilcrowDesigns [2012-02-07 05:12:57 +0000 UTC]

Ha! It has a learning curve, like anything, but there will be a moment when it just CLICKS for you. The first time I tried it I thought people were crazy...it just didn't seem that good to me.

Sanding sponges will help a lot. You can heat them up over an alcohol torch and start roughly smoothing out your forms. Then you can just use finer and finer sanding sponges until it starts looking good.

I just started in WED clay....and HO-lee shit do I love it!
Thanks man!

You, of course, have nailed yet another likeness! Your skills never ceases to amaze me. I'm so glad you post on DA. And I can imagine that the hair would be a real b---h to pull off.

fantastic!
did you have to find your own reference photos of the actors you sculpt or do the studios send you front/side/top pics of the actors?
I tried sculpting her in zbrush once and the only decent reference pics i could find were of her on the 'red carpet'
great job again!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to TeuvoH [2012-02-06 18:22:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Yep, that's what I do too. I hunt for all my own reference online. With hot young actresses, there's a ridiculous amount of great photo reference available. it gets tougher with the more obscure people. I usually use those red carpet photos most, because the lighting is more honest. Studio shots are usually flooded with light, and fairly unhelpful. (except for hair styling and what not)
I always compile a few hundred photos or so if I can. The more information you can glean, the better the sculpt looks.

thanks again!!

So I'm beginning to think that your ability to capture awesome likenesses is not a fluke Your work is amazing!

ha! Well thank you very much. I always fear I'll lose the ability to capture likenesses, so I try to keep up with it by doing a few each month if I can.

So Trev, do you ever have a moment when sculpting these beauties when you realise that fundamentally their faces aren't as spectacular as they appear on screen? Lol. Good likeness again mate!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to DavidWFisher [2012-02-06 17:04:38 +0000 UTC]

Ha! Nice question. I totally do. It's actually cool, because all of these starlets seem as ordinary to me as anyone else. They're still beautiful girls, but I've seen just as pretty in day to day life.
I always say the best photos for me to use when sculpting are the really unflattering ones, which usually show a lot of shadow. Most women are photographed with a lot of direct light which eliminates harsh shadows and makes them appear young. Those kinds of reference shots are useless to me, usually.

thanks David!
