Description Join me in my time machine, we're about to go back to (cue spooky music)THE PAAAAAST! ooooooooooooooooh

This is an old sculpt from 2008 for an unproduced Cate Blanchett from Indiana Jones 4. I did this one on my own, because while the movie did disappoint my little geek heart, I still thought she looked awesome. Sideshow did not produce a figure from this, and I doubt very much that they would now. Not to mention, this was sculpted so long ago, the scale is really out of whack compared to what I do today.

Just a little something before Christmas...because I aint got nuthin' else I can show.

Yep, the old-fashioned way. Well...somewhat. I sculpt almost everything in hard wax.

I have a question: those little painting stands I've seen artists use, do you make them yourselves? The ones that look like pieces of wire attached to the pieces... And if so, how do you temporarily affix them to the model?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to Free-Falling [2011-12-22 03:40:31 +0000 UTC]

hmmm, not sure I know the ones you're talking about, but I just tend to use dowels. Lately I like using clear acrylic dowels because they photograph better. To affix it, I just carve a hole into the bottom or neck of the headsculpt and lodge the dowel into place temporarily until I can take my photos.

Hope that helps!

Free-Falling In reply to TrevorGrove [2011-12-23 17:09:33 +0000 UTC]

You carve pieces out of the models to fit the dowels? o.o" And that doesn't affect the finished product?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to Free-Falling [2011-12-24 06:10:01 +0000 UTC]

ha! Well, as you can see the dowel is inserted into the bottom of the sculpture...not much to damage there. I just fill the hole after I take photos.

Oh, I see. I've been wondering how to go about painting figurines; I've always had the worst time with fingers getting in the way. I was about to try hot gluing wire to less-than-noticable spots so I'd have something to grip XD

Yeah, unfortunately back in the days I sculpted her, I didn't know how to make molds of my work. Otherwise I'm sure Adam would have had a bushel of them.

Man, seriously though, I cannot wrap my brain around how you do what you do! I can cheat, exaggerate where I need to and use "style" to manipulate a likeness, but what you are doing... it's just so exact and yet, so natural at the same time. It's not fussy or stiff, but man... it's ALWAYS the likeness you're going for... SPOT. ON! Really amazing!

TrevorGrove In reply to J-Scott-Campbell [2011-12-22 07:08:54 +0000 UTC]

Ha! Wow, I appreciate that so much! Thanks man!

I feel the same way about your work...I guess we all have that reaction to the stuff we aren't involved in! ...I mean, your exaggerated likenesses are AMAZING to me, and I honestly wish I could do caricatured stuff in sculpture. That True Blood piece you just recently posted on here...I don't even watch the show and I recognized everyone. It's full of life.

Happy Holidays!

I hear you duder, I too still feel the pain of disappointment from KOTCS. BUT, I will say Cate Blanchett is one of the highlights of the movie itself. Spalko was great, "chewing her wubeyous" and all. Great work Trevor.

Yeah, exactly! Of all the movie's numerous problems, Blanchett wasn't one of them.
Thanks!!

thanks!
