Description i love dark elves of any flavour, but my favourite are the Ashlands Dunmer of Morrowind.

i think i'm getting the hang of this Wacom tablet thing. for a while everything i did looked like a cheesy airbrushed 80s van wizard. if anyone can help me remedy this, lemme know.

Tablets are fun, it just takes a while to find out what you like. After that, using a mouse feels clunky and cumbersome.
Kudos to you for the love of Morrowind's Dunmer. I've played all those games, from Arena to Oblivion (only finishing the two I have mentioned) but the Dunmer, their gravelly voices and ingenious architecture/armour were enough to make me sigh and say "Gdamn I would have loved to work on this game".

Best thing to do to avoid that rapevan look is to use hard-edged brushes. I like it, but there's a few things going on here you might want to look at:

1. Her head looks too big.
2. Her right eye is messed up, anatomically.
3. Perspective on the bow seems off.
4. The bowstring would look a bit thicker at this distance, I think.
5. Try adding hot specular highlights on a dodge adjustment layer.

That being said I think this piece has a lot going for it, especially in terms of personality. Digital painting is awesome, but takes a little getting used to. If you're interested in something that mimics natural media have you ever tried Artrage? I quite like it, myself. Painter-like results without the terrible 1995 interface.

I've heard Artrage get highly recommended by many good friends, but you are a stickler for plain' ol PS yourself aren't you?

pee ess... i literally spat my coffee when i read the term "rapevan"

The more I work with Artrage the more I like it. [link]

Photoshop is good for the mechanical concepts I've been doing a lot of because it lets me add in shading rapidly and make it look like a marker illustration. Really, I think it's a toolbox. I could imagine my illustration workflow going Sketch--> Photoshop--> Artrage--> Photoshop for the best control with the least trouble. Besides, it's free for the basic version and $20 for the full. I'm just using the basic one myself.

Try using low-opacity layering; use a brush set on low opacity to build up colour.
