Description OH MAN the amount of texting that goes on in Japan is RIDICULOUS. Texting is cheaper here, what with phones generally being more advanced, but also you can't call on trains, so people text to avoid being rude.

HOWEVER. I can actually say I've seen, on two occasions, someone texting while riding a bike (one of which nearly ran me off the sidewalk b/c she wasn't looking), and I'm ALWAYS getting stuck behind the SLOWEST people in the crowded stations or even out on the streets because they HAVE to text AT THAT MOMENT or they will DIE. And that's about when it strikes me as ironic that they have a phone, and yet...they're texting. Surely, talking and walking is easier. I wonder how many pedestrians have walked out into traffic b/c of texting. I mean, seriously. Like, it was bad at home when I left, but here, it's at a WHOLE other level.

Enjoy!

ha ha wow here its texting while driving to the point where its now against the law to do so. However on your argument I would like to say most people when they are doing more than one task actually do an action slower and since most people talk fast on phones, it means the walk slow while talking. That doesn't mean it would be slower than the person texting however, also I know I do this, when I talk on the phone I sometimes close my eyes or look around me, not for any reason really closing to maybe picture things or hear better, the look around, short attention span? Half the time when I text on sidewalk I generally just stop walking all together and stand in one place until I am done for the moment and then continue walking.

I hate talking on the phone so I can understand why they prefer texting, if nothing else because it's more private. Still I only do it while standing or sitting...how the frick do you do it while riding a bike? O_o

Oh, I hate phones too, I have somewhat of a phone phobia myself ^_^;; So I do get the texting, but like... you don't need to text and walk or bike ^_^;; like, if it's THAT important, you probably should be calling them.

Here in the states, we make it illegal to text unless you're not moving, not working, and not in an emergency (in which we expect a phone call). It's the anti-Japan.

LOL, the anti-Japan. And each state is different I suspect. I only head that CA made driving and texting illegal, but that's the last I head.

Oh, that's pretty common, actually, amongst all the states. The data is conclusive: texting and driving = dying.

I'm only slightly ashamed to say that I'm one of those people.
However I will move aside and stop instead of wander along at a ridiculous pace. I text because I have a strange phobia of phone calls. My friend rang me once, it was weird, I didn't even know my phone had the ability to take calls... I didn't even recognise my own ringtone. Yeah... I'm not proud.

Aaha, yeah, I had to do it a few times when I was getting off the train and in the middle of an email message that was important. but I was able to keep up a fast pace and get out of the way of the hurrying people when I needed to.

Funny story: I ended up having to guide my friend through the train station today because she was texting and nearly walked into like 10 people. She almost walked off the platform once too.

is there a law about texting and driving/operating a phone and driving in japan? because i know in new york you can only use a phone hands-free.

I'd assume it's banned here too, but I'm not sure.

Cheaper? People still pay for sending text messages? As long as you have a plan, text messages are free in Sweden.

Everything's cheaper in Sweden, but the taxes are murder.

sephizero In reply to jeditoby [2012-11-05 04:22:33 +0000 UTC]

That is something I can't argue with. xD The taxes are borderline ridiculous. But I think the exchange is worth it. Higher education is free, having to go to the hospital wont bankrupt you; if you lose your job suddenly you're not fscked, we get nice parks and roads. It's pretty dope.

jeditoby In reply to sephizero [2012-11-05 04:31:20 +0000 UTC]

I agree with that! But trying to convince 300 million people and transition in a non-bankrupting way...that's the trick, isn't it?

sephizero In reply to jeditoby [2012-11-05 06:46:12 +0000 UTC]

That's true. Also, I'm not sure the US could sustain a socialist economy. Not because it couldn't work, but because too many people would probably take advantage of it - or try to.

jeditoby In reply to sephizero [2012-11-05 13:58:15 +0000 UTC]

Right. Or, in our case, even the perception of "being taken advantage of" is enough to prompt election of anti-socialist laws.

In the US, when I left, you either had to pay SO SO SO much, or pay WAY too much for plans. In Japan, people have email addresses associated with their phones and since every phone has the internet, that I know of, and most people sign up for unlimited internet, it's a lot cheaper.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sephizero In reply to TriaElf9 [2012-11-05 04:25:04 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty much what we do here in Sweden too. Text messaging is free, sure; but sending emails is just as easy and if you happen to be in range of someones (or yours) wifi, then it's free too. And 4G is pretty cheap too. The only thing you have to be careful of is roaming charges when you travel abroad - those are murder.

Huh... I know this feeling...
The second thing I hate the most in the world is people who are getting in my way when I'm walking.
The first thing I hate is people that say: "I told you so" when you're agreeing with them.

This is when I become the kind of person who shoves everyone out of the way.

Also, texting on a BIKE?! I can't lose focus for a second on a bike, or I fall off. How is that possible!?

AAAAARRGGGRAWWRGARAGAARARRR

I really don't like dwadlers.
The French version of this is caused by the French "mwah-mwah" greeting. Some people will run into a group of acquaintances and proceed to kiss EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. on the cheeks. And stick around and say a few words to each person of course. Aside from that, we also have our Lookout Textwalkers.

Your rage face in the fourth panel looks incredibly realistic for this situation.

Not unusual here in the Philippines either... we almost always text while walking. Although I feel like we have x-ray vision or something to look through the phone and not trip onto something.
