I wonder how they allowed 475 to run without a cowcatcher?
Isn't there some rule stipulating that all of Strasburg's locomotives need to have one?

I don't know of any hard and fast rule about that. When SRC rebuilt #475 this past year for the #611 reunion, they restored her to look exactly the way N&W ran her in the 40's and 50's....with a step pilot. I understand that the 'cowcatcher' style pilot was added after she was retired by N&W. Strasburg #31 (ex CN 7312) also always had a step pilot which was more common with switchers and branch line locomotives. I think the 'cowcatcher' style was probably a left over from the 1800's and very early 1900's when cows roamed 'free range' particularly in the west. IMO, I think they look better with a step pilot...

Okay.
It's just that I recall hearing something about the cowcatchers in a video talking about the history of Thomas in Strasburg (which at one point mentioned why he has a cowcatcher).

Thanks!... The most notable thing was the smell of the fresh paint on the hot boiler...you could smell this thing coming before you saw it!...

Strasburg certainly did a fine job on #475. I wonder how long they going to keep her in this paint scheme.
