If the aurora moves quite fast and you start to see a hint of red, pink or purple, you know it will be amazing.
It certainly was this evening, did not last long, but 30 seconds of great aurora is something you can live on for weeks.

Yes but the camera I had then overexposed a lot and there is not much you can do with that?

Yeah, generally it does ruin a photo, if it overexpose by more than 1 stop you rarely ever can recover the highlights.

There's an object to the left of the top of the stack of rocks and a little over 3/4 of the way up the image. Its that a star cluster, nebula, or an oops?

That is the Pleiades, you will notice them on most wide angle photography at night, but if you really take a telescope and get close they look amazing.
