Description
this the the progress i went through for a class assignmentfirst, the initial concept of the character
then, i play with the silhouettes while changing around costume design
i refine into a final design
and do a turnaround, making it ready for topology placement, and then modeling!

This is SO GOOD!!! O_O ...Gosh, where'd you get all the ideas for the different designs for the armor?? I only practiced armor by collecting Fire Emblem pics... @_@;

but, a rule to designing things is to avoid taking ideas from other people's work

well, the thing is, they had to get their ideas from someplace. They went and looked up pictures, found what they liked and took a little bit from different armors to base their designs off of. for examples sake, lets say they extracted 50% of ideas from actual photos for their designs. If you look at theirs, you are only getting a 50% possibility for creativity, and in the long run, you will probably end up getting 25% of what was originally there.
So the point im getting to is, go and google up some different armors. Different armors from different eras, and from different countries. I tell you, research opens up so many creative possibilities!

Avoid taking ideas from people's work. Okay, got it. But what if it's just for the sake of practice? 
YEAH!! I know that technique!! XD That's exactly what I did to study different hairstyles!!

neat, this really caught my attention. I like the third from the right. Good balance of object on his clothing. The torso almost reminds me of fable.

<3 anatomy! i love it. The clothing looks very cohesive, but the first one the right looks a bit too involved- all the patterns... i'm partial to the cloak, actually ^.^ good jorb

armor is hard to draw unless you get the hang of it. you just need to figure out some shortcuts for yourself, and then your set!
try going with some simple shapes that could be used to represent armor, and then going from there
