Description
“You shall forfeit the use of that tongue with which you have cheated me, except for that one purpose you are so fond of—reply. You shall have the last word, but no power to speak first.”Artemis, goddess of the hunt, known also as the patron and protector of young girls, favored Echo, a nymph who often accompanied her on her hunts. The story goes that Echo, after receiving Hera's curse, fell hopelessly in love with Narcissus. Narcissus, however, did not return her affection and instead fell in love with his own reflection in the water. He ended up starving himself to death as he laid by the riverbed and stared at himself. After his death, Echo spent the rest of her life hidden away in a cave, where her flesh and bones molded into the rocks as she died.
Depicted in the image is Artemis, disguised as a maiden, in her attempt to find Echo and save her from her fate of falling for Narcissus. Zondra is lending a hand (or hoof!) by giving her a quick lift through the forest.
