Description Behold, the Siren of Vistallah! ...Which is also the Laminathon of Vistallah....

Yes, these giant sea serpant women also sing! And because their bodies are equipted with lung extensions--extending almost the entire legnth of thier tail, to help themwith boyancy and staying underwater longer--they can sing for a long time. A long, long time. Indeed, Laminathon songs are sung without pauses for breath. A half hour or even more of unbroken melody!

Now, there's nothing supernatural about the siren's song--well, not about the song itself--but it can be dandgerously alluring. First, because its only sung at night. Laminathons have sensitive eyes--to help them see in deep water--and typically only surface at night. Also, they don't sing while bobbing around in the waves. Proper singing requires proper posture, which means the Laminiathon must be seated on the beach or--as in this case--on a reef or shoal just below the water's surface. Lastly, her song is often heard by men who haven't seen a woman in too long, and may become foolhardy upon hearing one. So, a siren's song is dangerous to follow, but only because following it means rashly sailing one's ship into hazardous area in the dark. Its better--if you hear one--to just close your eyes and let her voice sooth you to sleep....

I can imagine she's a beautiful singer

Am I the only one who imagines her singing this?

Given that they're sentient beings who can survive in the depths of the ocean I have to wonder. Has anyone ever asked a Lamina to help with cargo retrieval from a shipwreck? Perhaps even offering her some form of compensation though I'm not sure what one could offer her. Also I've been wondering.

Let's say that a crew for one reason or the other decided they really disliked their captain but not enough to murder him. So they set him in a life boat and put him out to sea. What would a typical Lamina do if she saw a human standard in the middle of the ocean so far from land that there is no way he can reach it under his own power and with very limited supplies?

That and has a Lamina ever decided to start collecting stranded or shipwrecked sailors? Perhaps on an island that's rather dangerous for ships of any size but easy for her to navigate.

To the first, someone might have, but the only way you could ask a Laminiathon anything is if she contacted you first. Given solitary nature and how easilly they move in the ocean as compared to people on ships, there is no way to track them down to ask for a favort...

On the second, that would depend entirely on the personality of the girl involved, and of what she thought of the stranded sea-farer. (Is he cute? Does he seem like a guy I want to be friends with? etc.)

And on the last, I'm not sure about collecting multiple stranded sailors, but I've mused about drawing (but never actually drawn) pictures of a Laminiathon watching over someone stranded on an island. ...Because when you're with a friendly girl like that who can easilly bring you food, why would you ever want to be 'rescued' from such a situation?

Only one brief, brief critique - you have what appears to be stars drawn within the shadowed region of the crescent moon.

Interesting name and interesting concept. It works out nicely. Enormous lung capacity, beautiful singing voice, soothing songs, always near the shoreline or shallows, and only at nighttime - I can see where that'd result in some problems for sailors and most likely a lot of stories getting passed around about the deadly siren's song.

....D'oh! I guess I went speckle-happy when adding that background.

..As for the rest, thanks. I really did feel the whole siren concept really came together nicely...

Well, if I'm going through the trouble of making them not-black, I may as well have fun with them!

This pure genius. Beautiful job here, Triff. I can easily see some enterprising ship captain striking a deal with one of these ladies (or not) for weekly night-time excursions to 'Hear the haunting melodies of the deep!'. Your Vistallah setting continues to be one of my favorite examples of worldbuilding.

...Or deliberately charting a course to take his ship past as many reafs and shoals as he can fine!
Anyway, good to hear such kind words about the setting!

If someone crashes, does she help them?

Great pic by the way.

I would hope so! Though she may reprimand them for being idiots as she does...

Surely it's more often than once every blue moon that they come out to sing, though, right?

Oh, yeah! The blue moon here is just a bit of an artistic flair.

Why are the sails in the water near her ?

TriffRaff In reply to TinyPet [2011-02-23 16:42:36 +0000 UTC]

Um, those were supposed to be rocks. They're poking through the surface to show that there more rock (or reef, or whatever) just below the surface for her to be sitting on. ....I guess I need a bigger color pallet for rock. Or to take the time to draw them as barnacle-encrusted or something....

Nah, its just night, so all the sails are tied up on the yardarms there. Not specifically drawn, but that's so far in the background I figured it'd be too hard to draw...
