Description "Wow, this sure is a beautiful sunset. I only wish I has someone to share it with..."

A She-Drake tries to lure a mountaineer out of his hiding spot and into her lap. Of course, when her coaxing inevidably fails, she won't have a second's hesitation about simply reaching in and pulling him out. But, still, it would be more romantic if he would come out on his own accord.

....Yeah, I'm not sure about these atmospheric effects. They're just a little bit out of my comfort zone....

I think it's a nice picture. The ice drake just wants the human to come out of his hiding spot

The sunset/sky effects do work fairly well in this drawing. The drake is a little too sketchy, in my opinion, but you get the general idea. My eye did catch that nice crack in the rock-shelf the drake is resting upon. Dunno why, but the first thing I thought is - better hope that doesn't break or the guy's gonna get pancaked.

...I think I added that crack just to have something artistically break up the monotony of the ledge. Didn't think about it breaking. But at least there looks to be plenty of rock still existing between the cave and edge of the ledge....

Good eye. This was very sketchy, and then artificially heavied up in photoshop prior to coloring. Another casualty of laziness. I didn't feel like going back and retracing everying (in pencil or ink), so I just scanned it as it was.

Maybe she need to be more explicit. Something like:

It would be great if someone with a green shirt who would happen to be hiding in a small cave about 10 feet away from me would come out to enjoy the sunset with me while resting on my lap... But there is really no one around is there ? After all, I would know if someone was around. It's not like a human could possibly hide from a lonely drake.

That way the man would get the hint. At the very least, it would get him to come on to run away. But then again, it might be to explicit and ruin the romantic aspect.

Having to chase him down....would be a 'different' sort of romantic. But for a Drake, an equally enjoybable one!

...Emphasising her lap might work, though...

Now he's just being silly if he doesn't come out. Well that or he's panicked and not thinking the situation through. After all she's at least making something of an effort to be friendly and he's coming out one way or another apparently. The only thing his being stubborn changes is that he's going to be a little more scared when she reaches in to grab him and perhaps she'll be a little bit annoyed that he didn't play along. Given his situation it seems that keeping her in a good mood would be in his best interest well in most regards.

I do wonder if someone has ever done too good of a job though and perhaps their attempts to appease the drake resulted in extending their stay or a return visit. What's the odds of a drake coming back for the same person twice if they found that person's company to be entirely lack luster or even disappointing? Then again I suppose that question relates to how many people the drake has to pick from. Small community fewer pickings.

That's another question actually. I get that drakes don't like to be near large human settlements as then they have to worry about numbers. However, if the settlement is too small they have to worry about not enough. So about what is the optimum size of a settlement a drake would prefer to live near?

On another note. Lately your drakes are looking a bit more armored then some of the older examples. They're getting more spikes and more plating. Is this a change in your style or does it suggest a difference in drakes and their health? I'm wondering if perhaps the older drakes who are in a state of good health might have developed more in terms of their natural armor and spines while a drake who's had difficulty meeting their magic requirements might have thinner softer armoring.

I figure that dealing with someone that much bigger than you is going to induce fear...Even if you suspect that she does have good intentions. ...Of course, since even those 'good intentions' will leave him bruised, battered, and exhausted...

The accessories for the Drakes...The extra plating shown on this lady actually is a throw-back to some of the earlier design. But in general...Over time, I've developed a whole series of 'accessory' spikes and such that I can use on Drakes. Sometimes I mix and match accessories, sometimes I leave them off. If the Drakes look spiker now, its just because I've accumulated more ideas for accessories, and have more options to choose from when drawing them.

As for how big a population a Drake 'needs'...I don't see that as ever being an issue. A flying beast that size would have a very large territory, and even with only scattered farms across a county... Any land that could reasonable be called 'inhabited' should be suitable for them. (Assuming there's also a supply of food and vegetation to destroy, and the Drake has a decent hoard to keep.) And I'm not envisioning Drakes needing more than 1 companion every month or so. They'd keep thier 'guest' for a week or so, then live alone for another couple weeks until they start feeling lonely again... That shouldn't put too much of a strain the any population. (In general. It may put quite a bit of strain on thier 'guest!' )
