Β Gorgeous! While its true these horses carry HYPP breeders of this caliber always test and seldom, if at all breed HYPP positive horses. Also these horses often slim down as they get older, I use to compete AQHA youth qualifying for world a couple of times, with a mare who was pushing 1300 pds at 15.3 hands when she was 3-5 years old. Once she slimmed down and was no longer mutton withered she ended up being a barrel horse with around 75K earnings by the time she was 10 years old and was always of sound even chasing cows and cans of nearly 1200pds "direct granddaughter of Impressive" the only issue I have with these halter horses was the breeding for tiny feet, if they are gonna be this big they need to have a good healthy bone and foot on them. . Side note: Majority of these larger QHS go back to Impressive who did have a genetic mutation for larger muscle mass.Β

That can't be good for him.. I can't imagine the strain being put on his legs; his body mass is so huge compared to the rest of him.

"There is controversy amongst owners, breeder and veterinarians regarding the health effects of the extreme muscle mass that is currently fashionable in the specialized halter horse, which typically is 15.2 to 16 hands and weighs in at over 1,200 pounds (540 kg) when fitted for halter competition. Not only are there concerns about the weight to frame ratio on the horse's skeletal system, but the massive build is also linked to HYPP"

my family and I have been breeding quality Quarter Horses for years and we have never had a horse with problems that was built like this.
and believe me, we have a vet come check our horses every two months.

HYPP doesn't show at birth, onset of symptoms can begin late in life, there are cases of eight, fifteen, twenty one year olds just beginning to show signs. Bottom line, the QH is NOT meant to be built like this. No horse is. People who try for this overly muscled frame are emulating a disease.

We have horses at my ranch that we have had since birth that are in their 30s that show no signs of problems.
Most of our studs and geldings are built like this.
and we breed to quality reining and cutting lines, not their muscles
we just happen to have some well-muscled horses is all.
not all well muscled QH like pictured above are the result of breeding for "overly muscled frames" they are just muscular in frame.

I'm not saying that every muscular QH has HYPP, and I'm not saying this overly muscular frame is going to ruin every horse. I'm saying that they were bred to be this muscular, it is NOT how they are naturally. You don't go out and find a horse that looks like this out in the wild, just like how you don't go out and find a 17hh warmblood in the wild. They are not naturally made this way, it is a result of purposeful breeding.

all depends on the type of person with the horses.
Don't get me wrong, I know a handful of people in my town that have done just what you're saying.
and many of their horses do have HYPP.
but as far as the last vet check on our horses, none of ours have it or show any sign of it at all.
we just have well-muscular horses

That's not how they were meant to be built. A common side effect of HYPP (a genetic disease which causes paralyzation and intense muscle twitches, and sometimes death) is this huge amount of muscling. This disease is common in the QH. The horse is not meant to look this way, however some people find this look attractive, and breed for it, when it is unhealthy for the horse. Look at the size of the muscles, and then look at the head and feet. That is an incredible amount of muscle on a normal sized skeleton. It's very detrimental, and if the horse here has HYPP, it's just a plain old disease, and there's nothing healthy about that.

that horse is built like a pitbull lol. they're pretty but not much good for anything other than halter because they can't move very fast.

D3AD-ACCOUNT In reply to xKiwix [2012-07-15 05:45:45 +0000 UTC]

actually they can be used for many things.
this horse is probably used for a number of things other than halter shows.
he would be a great cutting and reining horse
