NEVER MINDI'm not gonna color it. Cos .. i wasn't even GONNA do this. But wanted to see it in action
after i told her i had a serious zutara theory/piece in mind... ... so.. there ya go. the lines.NOW. the explanation. Follow along please:
Ok so Katara's pissed as it is right? then little dude here runs over to ask for food. She looks down at him. NOW FOR MY OWN FUN PURPOSE i CHANGED his eye color to Zuko's. HOWEVER he COMES WITH A SCAR. Anyways she is quietly mesmerized, murmurs stuff about wishing she could do more as she hands over the food. She watches him run back, and sees him kneeling down to help feed his mother. NOW. Who does Katara know from the FN that had such a DEEP love and affection for his mother? *smirk* Seeing that she is suddenly shocked (second last panel) at how she remembers him, and then finally sad (tears welling) . Why the tears? Because she feels bad for losing the boy she got to know so well in those brief few moments. the boy who had such potential in him to do good, to care to love others. She feels maybe if he had been ruler, the place would not have come to such ruin. psychologically it's fact that there are visual triggers to our schemas, our expectations, our thoughts, our actions. Well.. there you go. I think subtle as it was, the placement of the scarred FN boy , so close to his mother, is .. kind of meant to be a memory trigger of Zuko for Katara. Watch the show. there is ALWAYS subtleties. ALWAYS.
NOW. i am NOT OPENING ANY DEBATE OR ANYTHING OK? This is MY THOUGHTS . MY OPINION. If you have yours good for you. I don't want to hear about it opposing shippers.
even if i might be stretching it a little.. who cares? XDD it's my little mind and universe.. and that's what i think might have happened

I definitely agree with your little summary....I've been thinking about something similar....
Remember in "The Awakening" when Aang and Katara are talking alone and Aang says, "You saved me." She totally avoids eye contact with him, and tries to be nonchalant as she says, "I just used the spirit water from the north pole. I don't know what I did, exactly." As she looks away, we know what she is thinking. She knows she almost used that spirit water on someone else...and she's probably feeling guilty about it. She still hasn't told the gang anything about what went on in that cave....
I think her self-guilt is starting to turn into self-anger, in the same way that zuko is starting to realize he is angry at himself. Katara's probably angry with herself for ever offering to heal zuko's scar....but at the same time, she's probably also feeling sad she couldn't help him in any way...that she couldn't help him change.
so, like you said, in "the painted lady", it was almost as if she was trying to make up for not being able to help zuko. she put all her passion into it, completely determined to help these people, no matter if she had to put the rest of the gang in jeopardy or not.
i think that self-guilt and self-anger and sadness and everything kind of all just exploded in the painted lady. she didn't want to feel guilt anymore for what she did in the cave, and she didn't want to feel guilt for what she was doing in that town. it all kind of exploded on sokka when she yelled, "NO! I will never EVER turn my back on people who need me!"
I think that line was being spoken, not only about the people in the town, but also about Zuko. Even though the gang doesn't know what went on in that cave, she knows the shame she would feel if they did know. So, I think this line was her defense for her actions in the cave, as well as her actions as "the painted lady." She doesn't want to be blamed for helping people, she doesn't want to feel ashamed for trying to do what's right. Because, you have to admit, she did kind of overreact with that line....did you see sokka's face when she yelled? it was like....woah! calm down there killer! So i think she was trying to defend herself about ALL of her actions, even though the gang doesn't know about them.
WOW, sorry for my long rant. I don't even know if it made sense. I'm tired. LOL
OH! And I know this has NO RELEVANCE to anything whatsoever, and it's probably not any kind of sign or hint or ANYTHING (so I don't even know why I'm mentioning it) but I just thought it was interesting and no one seemed to notice. You know how Zuko called Ty Lee "Circus freak"? Remember the one other person who also called her "Circus freak?" Yeah. Katara. "Try blocking my chi now, circus freak!"

Very interesting twist on this episode. I never really thought of it that way before.
After seeing last Friday's episode "The Beach", I think it is quite possible for Zuko and Kitara to come together. They both have strong independent wills, they are both passionate about what they believe in, and they are very stubborn.
Still both characters also have a lot of barriers to overcome, for although Kitara may warm up to Zuko, it will take some time before he begins to see the truth behind his actions. He is very insecure, and suffers from years of emotional and verbal abuse from his distant father and cold sister. He has this desire to prove himself no matter the cost, to them, but secretly it also seems like he longs for that peaceful time back in Bah Sing Seh with his uncle.
How will this play out with Kitara and Zuko. Well I guess both of them will have to come to a point where they will have to decide for themselves what is more important, their own agendas or each other.

Actually, I agree with you. At the risk of stretching towards your warning....I don't think of it as a shipping front, personally, but I do believe that Katara feels a certain failure for not helping Zuko. Whether or not it becomes a shipping issue is irrelevant. Rufftoon even expressed a belief in that with one of her comics, and I don't know if there is anybody who would argue that. I actually never thought about it that way before....her taking charge in "The Painted Lady" because of a failure to help Zuko....she's got to have angsted over that....if she'd healed Zuko's scar (which, unfortunately, she couldn't have, according to the creators....T_T), maybe he wouldn't have joined Azula, and Aang wouldn't have fallen, and Ba Sing Se wouldn't have fallen, and the Earth Kingdom wouldn't have fallen....yeesh....no wonder she helped the village.....
I never thought about the whole thing before. Good call!

Personally, I think you should DEFINITELY give him the scar in the one colored panel, though. It would add so much drama...you don't have to color anything else....but if you had just one panel colored, the one with the scar and eyes, that would be enough power.

Hey, I'm not a Zutarian, but that doesn't mean that I oppose every point and fact. Katara's a loving character. If she didn't have that, she would never have offered to heal Zuko's face.
Main reason why I debate. To think. Reading and writing allows throught, and even if I can't get the other side to change their minds, I might find myself going down a path....like this one. Thanks for the fun and thought!
I can't wait to see their interaction when they meet again....[though, personally, I would DIE if we had a scene where Mai and Katara get into a "chat"...only thing better would be Ty Lee/Suki or Suki/Toph interaction.....]

Naw, I don't know if they'll talk...but the thought of those two....
Picture this: Zuko dies trying to deflect a lightning bolt away from Katara (successful, yes, but that darn through-the-heart thing)....Iroh and Katara and Aang and Mai are all present there. Iroh and Aang both enter the Spirit World to try and bring Zuko back, leaving Mai and Katara alone to protect the bodies. I don't think the situation would ever happen, but the awkward tension would be a good counter-humour to the severity of the situation....picture Toph and Appa outside the library.
And then Aang and Zuko and Iroh all emerge from the Spirit World to find Katara and Mai completely lip-locked.
