Hi, Saphyrae here from ProjectComment !
Hopefully I can help you answer your questions! In my opinion, his expression tells me that he's thinking about something. Looking away from the camera like that kind of implies that he's pensive, more preoccupied with his own thoughts than what's going on in front of him. It's an interesting perspective to make in a drawing! Second, I think for shading and lighting, you've got a great start but what you should do to keep improving is to work on your dynamic range. By that I mean using more contrast between dark and light. Try blocking in shading really roughly before you blend/blur anything, I find this helps me get a bigger difference between my shadows and highlights.
Another tip for doing lighting is drawing in a circle or some other indicator of where the light source is on the drawing, and then making it directional, directly coming out of that source. Your drawing is a really great example of ambient shading, if the light is coming from all around; but most situations have directional, not ambient light. If you want to make it look really realistic, try to think about where the light is coming from, and anything exposed to that direction is lighter and anything not exposed to the light is darker. I know that sounds simple, but if you go through and systematically apply this it can help a whole lot with shading!
The last tip I have is to make a separate layer with a darker colour and set it to the blending mode multiply. Shade in wherever you want shadows in whatever colour you want the shadows to be tinted, apply the blending mode and voila! It won't cover over whatever details you've already put in, it will tint it all evenly and make it really look like a shadow.
Lastly, these tutorials might be helpful when you're working on shading/lighting:

Hope this helps! Good luck in the future
