Description The Early Winters Spires on the North Cascades Highway are part of the Liberty Bell Group.

The granite spires are ~ north spire 7,760 ft (2,366 m) and south spire 7,809 ft (2,380 m).

(That is an avalanche chute in the foreground.)

very impressive!

"north" and "south" are rather unimaginative names. did they run out of wine labels?

Maybe they did. The 2 are part of a much larger formation that fractured over the centuries. These spires make up Early Winters.

Thanks!

With 60 feet of powder snow skiing it would be like floating…until you sink or reach the bottom.
At the bottom it goes back up the opposite side of the valley just as fast.

Thank you!

This was taken right below them...literally. The last climb to the summit, the highway has that sharp horseshoe turn and crosses the front of the formation. There is a pull-out there and I didn’t even get out of the car…just rolled down the window and shot. That avalanche chute dumps right onto the highway.

Could well be... Several cars (and bikes) pulled over while I was there.
On the other hand, that stretch just before there is long and steep so they may have overheated. There is a sign at the bottom of the grade suggesting you turn off the AC so you don’t overheat.

didnt even think about that! was chilly that night so dont think the AC was used, but could still overheat

Fantastic picture Bob! I wouldn't want to be anywhere near the 'chute' when it does it's thing

Thank you, Simon!

I wouldn't want to be near there in winter either. Last winter there was only 15 feet of snow up there but some winters there can be 3 or 4 times that amount. The pass is closed in winter as there is too much snow to plow.
