This series if from the Sardius Raptor Rescue Center. These birds were injured and cannot be released back into the wild as they would not survive. You can see from her right wing, she can no longer fly. This was at the Salmon Festival (yes we celebrate the annual return of the Coho salmon here in the west) last year. The festival was last weekend and I am happy to let you know she is still alive and was back. I likely won’t post any more shots f her, buy I have many from last year and this year. I can e-mail then if you want to see them.

One of my favourite raptors. A bit head strong when it comes to falconry though, and I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. I think people mostly like them for their aesthetic, but they are very pretty to look at. : )

He is beautiful. As you can see his wing was broken and healed improperly, so his soaring days are over. This raptor center has a 95% recovery and release rate, which is remarkable.

Yeah, I was thinking it looked a little weird. I wasn't sure if it was maybe just him having moved a wing or something; I can usually only tell something like that if I see the movement of the wing. I always think these non-release cases are good for breeding young in the future which can then be released, but that's just a thought. I'm unaware if that's ever actually been attempted successfully.

Breeding programs are being done and are successful. the California condor is a great example. Breeding programs took the species from only 3 known adult pairs in the wild to now well over 200. But usually depends on how vulnerable the species is to extinction. If they are thriving in the wild, breeding is not usually done.

Yeah; it's great that they've been successful with that then. I think I might have seen a documentary on the Condors a year or two back. They were using a fake sock puppet to act like the parent or something, it was all very cute. : )

Ya, it’s an expensive balance. You can’t let wildlife you are going to release become dependent on or bond with humans. There was something on Public Television awhile back about some dude in an ultra light leading a flock of whooping cranes (who were raised on a breeding program) on their annual migration. They had no flock to follow and would have become lost.

They made a movie out of something like that too, I think it was geese though. "Fly Away Home" or whatever, I used to love that as a kid. : )

Now that you mention it, it was “Fly Away Home” and they were snow geese not whooping cranes. They’re also engaged and I had the concept correct…what’s the wrong species between friends.

And it’s not just kids that like that ‘feel good’ and smutchy king of stuff…..

I like it but I think if the frame was filled up with the subject it would look a lot better.
