Description Here I present one of the two costumes I made for Animethon 14 (The other one will be posted soon so hang tight). This one is Luke fon Fabre from the video game Tales of the Abyss, and I'm not going to lie, but that is an incredibly fun coat to wear. You seriously feel like the most epic person in the world, and that your invincible (not that I would attempt to take on a semi-truck or anything......it's just a feeling)

My goal was the make this costume a complete replica (hehehehehe) of the original character design for Luke fon Fabre. *shifty eyes* Meaning I didn't carry the original character design picture around in my purse for 4 months *cough cough*. Any how for the interesting facts that I had fun thinking up while I spent my summer in front of my sewing machine.
1. Time to make this costume: I put it together in little parts over the 4 months I was working on both costumes, but essentially it was about a month and a half to get everything for this one put together.
2. Most difficult part: hmmmm........probably making the gloves, cause it essentially had to be completely hand sewn. so I guess it want that hard, it was just time consuming
3. The most fun section: Even though its my second least favourite seam to sew, sewing the sleeves of the coat on, cause once I turned it right side out, I proceeded to freak out and go into fits of giggles cause it LOOKED like Luke's coat. (I'm a looser I know)
4. Meters of bias tape I had to make: Why am I included this fact? Ummmmmmm.....well it was about 30 meters between the two costumes I made so I would say about 17 meters for this one? Something long.
5. Pattern or no pattern: I put this one together with a pattern guide for the coat, but essentially it was with no pattern cause the only thing that I kept the same as the pattern was the front-side seam.
6. Belt buckle: Yeah I couldn't find a belt buckle that was exact enough so I ended up making my own out of a necklace, coat hanger and a soldering iron.
7. Hair: I'm not a hair dresser so I really didn't try too hard to get it perfect but I did have my hair cut short (about 5 inches or so off) and get bangs for the soul purpose of this costume.

Thats enough facts for now. The other costume is the one with the really fun facts. And I give my original a giant hug for putting this together into a collage for me.

Thanks! ^^
Honestly Luke's cosplay isn't that difficult to put together. It's just over whelming at first, but once you break it down step wise, I'm sure you'll do awesome.

Trystle In reply to XTwilightPrincessX [2008-09-16 05:09:26 +0000 UTC]

I essentially made the pattern for Luke's coat so I don't really have a guide for you. What I did was start with a pattern for a jacket that had the seam lines in the front and back that I liked and then I butchered their pattern to make it fit what I wanted for Luke. I'm sorry but the skeleton pattern that I used is also back home in another city since I'm off at school right now. However, I'll do what I can to help you figure your pattern along the way. Feel free to send me a message or any questions you have and I'll do what I can to help. If you like I can quickly type up some step by step instructions if what I remember from how I put it together. Once again I sort of just winged it so I'll try not to miss out on anything.

Wow this is an awesome costume! I'm *hoping* to do a Luke cosplay at otakon this year, but seeing as how I completely fail at sewing, it probably won't get done in time. Do you remember how much the whole thing cost to make, cause I might end up commissioning the coat since that's the hardest part, but I don't want to pay a whole buncha extra money to get it....

Oh and, did you make Luke's sword, or just go without it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trystle In reply to GoldenAslan [2008-05-02 18:14:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I'm so glad to like how it came out. I was really pleased with it too.

The coat itself probably cost me about $100 for all the fabric (theres an inner lining), buttons, thread, interfacing and such. The entire costume was probably closer to $220 or something cause of the cost of the boots, belt, and gloves (all leather) and then theres the pants in there too but they weren't that expensive. Mind you this is canadian dollar but its not that far off from the US dollar I believe now.

I didn't actually end up making Luke's sword cause I ran out of time. I was also working on making Asch's cosplay costume at the same time. It was also easier to just work without one cause since Luke wears his sword on a horizontal I was scared that I would close line or gut people by accident while running around animethon ^^' But if you get a chance to make one, totally go for it. It's on my list of things to do at some point.

What fabric did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trystle In reply to GoldenKorat [2008-04-02 13:16:05 +0000 UTC]

I don't remember the exact name of it, but it's like a soft version of a twill or even a super soft canvas. It's considered a drapery fabric so I found it in with all the drapery rolls. What I found I like best about it was the volume to the fabric. It had a really nice weight to it so it hangs really well.

GoldenKorat In reply to Trystle [2008-04-21 01:41:37 +0000 UTC]

Cool, thanks very much (one of my friends has been trying to get me to use denim... but that's a no.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trystle In reply to GoldenKorat [2008-04-21 15:01:44 +0000 UTC]

yeah no kidding. Denim would probably end up being too heavy. You want a full fabric but not something that's that heavy. Not only would it get really really warm but it may also end up getting in the way alot cause it wouldn't hang as fully as you would like. I think the better way to go to get the full flowy effect would be to have an inner lining with a linen or something cause it's lighter and hit breaths well but still gives the coat some body. A little more work in the end though.

GoldenKorat In reply to Trystle [2008-05-05 17:10:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, what do you think of twill though?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trystle In reply to GoldenKorat [2008-05-05 22:33:02 +0000 UTC]

A twill should be fine. It's all going to depend on the knit, what your looking for is a fabric that has some body to it (so it needs some thickness). The one thing to watch in the twill is whether or not it's going to wrinkle easily or not. Some of them do and for something like Luke's coat, it's going to be a real pain to deal with. But in general, twill would = good ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GoldenKorat In reply to Trystle [2008-05-12 16:54:08 +0000 UTC]

Yay! Thankies. I have no worries of wrinkles thanks to my frigging beautiful clothes steamer! (Mommy does clothing embroidery, so I am cos-prepared for most any problems) What would you suggest for the gold line thingy? I planned on cutting out the pattern in white twill and a cottony-smooth maroon, then lining them up and using the gold to seal them together.... Is that a bad idea?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trystle In reply to GoldenKorat [2008-05-12 22:30:58 +0000 UTC]

That's essentially what I did. It saves on having to finish seams. For the actual edging, making bias tape is probably the easiest and you can use just about any type of fabric to make it, though I would aim for a stiffer fabric since the times I experimented with cottons, they look nice at first but after a while get themselves all out of whack and look a little 'oofy' (that's the best word I have for it)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GoldenKorat In reply to Trystle [2008-05-18 01:27:55 +0000 UTC]

Okay, but it's kinda hard to find a stiff bright YELLOOOOOWWWWW fabric.... Any suggestions?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trystle In reply to GoldenKorat [2008-05-18 14:15:16 +0000 UTC]

lol Just try and find something that works for the colour. If you have to use a cotton then you don't really have much of a choice. That's why I was saying that just about any fabric could be used, it's just the stiffer the better. That's one of the problems I ran into for my cosplay. I'm actually want to redo the bias taping if I get a chance to find some better yellow fabric.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GoldenKorat In reply to Trystle [2008-05-27 04:00:48 +0000 UTC]

I've gotten far... and have to rip out a sleeve. @_@; But thankfully I still have... 2-3 days... if I push it. >__<;;;; I think creating bias tape out of yellow cotton that I have is gonna be scary, but I'm out of cash for luke... You'd laugh if you saw how it looks now. But thanks for all your help! Without it, I'd still be fabric shopping. I hope my cosplay is half as good as yours.

What happened with one of the sleeves?

Wow, just wow!
You look awesome!
May i ask what type of pattern you used to make the coat? I'm setting off to buy fabric for a Luke cosplay soon.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trystle In reply to gawshno [2008-02-25 20:22:14 +0000 UTC]

^______________________^ Thanks so much

I started with just a simple jacket pattern that was fitted in the waist and was knee length. Everything from there I ended up changing as I worked on it, the length, the color, the sleeves, the closure, the opening of the coat, and the split in the back. But I suggest finding a jacket pattern that hangs frames your figure in a way that you like. That way you can use it as a skeleton to keep your Luke coat looking similar. I also suggest if your able to having an inner lining so that the coat has the right amount of body to it. Mind you it depends on the type of fabric you choose for the outside and the lining. Good luck with your coat and feel free to ask questions whenever!!!! And send pictures when you get it done. I love seeing others cosplay ^^

That's awesome? How'd you make the shoes? They turned out really well. :3 (Well, the whole cosplay did as well, but I'm very impressed about the shoes. Many Luke cosplayers tend to just wear black sneakers from what I've seen.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trystle In reply to rose-of-battle [2008-02-22 22:52:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm so glad you like it

The shoes were so much fun to make. I started with steel toed boots and I taped off the pattern and covered the rest of the shoe with plastic bags and then spray painted the brown part on with leather shoe paint. I was actually really impressed with how well it came out. Though after wearing them really often, they've started to get scuffed so I might need to repaint the toes but yeah. An easy way of making them. ^^
