I know that, having fifty percent of Portugese blood in my veins, I would normally feel attracted to Welsh Mythology (since both Portuguese and Welsh descend from the Celtiberians), but I found out Welsh Mythology is just dumb, especially the bit about Bran the Blessed. Really, I read the summary of the tale, and I couldn't find any association to his raven namesake (unless if you consider his link with the ravens of the Tower of London), and what is this tale about? A giant king gives permission for an Irish king to wed his sister, then the giant king's half-brother maims the Irish king's horses, and the giant king gives his brother-in-law a cauldron that could revive the dead. But after the newly married couple return to Ireland the giant's half-brother's actions continue to insult the Irish king (EVEN AFTER HIS HORSES WERE SUPPOSEDLY RESTORED TO LIFE), to the point he banishes his wife to the kitchen. She manages to sent a message to her brother, and there is a battle. In the middle of the battle the giant King's half-brother manages to save the day by sacrificing himself to destroy the cauldron. THE ONE WHO CAUSED THIS MESS END UP AS A HERO! Look, if any Welsh or anyone with Welsh ancestry reads this I mean no offence, I am just telling what I think.
Now, Irish a mythology is a lot richer. It has cycles (Mythological, Ulster, Feanna and Historical), and gods and demigods, not just dumb giants quarreling for stupid reasons. And of its characters, my favorite is Cú Chulainn, who has a dog motiff to himself (A CLEAR ONE, NOT A PURE ETYMOLOGICAL ONE LIKE WITH BRAN THR BLESSED). His story is charming, and he is comparable to virtually uinvincible Greek heroes like Achilles and Hercules. But what attracted me to this character is really his dog motiff, since I identify myself with dogs in terms of personality.

Ooh, I like it! I'm working on a novel which features Finn McCool (Fionn MacCumhaill). So many people only know the name because there is a chain of bar/restaurants blaspheming his name. I'd love to see your take on him.
I haven't done much reading about Cu Chulainn. I know know he spent some time on the Isle of Women and the Story of Cu Chulainn and Emer.

I liked genzoman's drawing better. Cu Chulainn looked like Conan in that picture. Your drawing makes him look more like Thor. And I kind of picture Cu Chulainn more as Conan than as Thor. In fact, I'm convinced that Cu Chulainn was Robert E. Howard's inspìration for Conan.

Well done artwork, but wasn't Cu Chulainn actually somewhat famous for NOT having a beard?

It's so strange that we focus so much attention on Greek/Roman Mythology and over look Celtic when it is far more related to most of us.
Great work.

You did him justice at least. Cu Chulainn is a hero of mine. Most modern-style art makes him look like an over-compensating ass, and there's not enough classical-style art of him.
You did a damn fine job with it. Have you read the Cattle Raid of Cooley, or were you just playing that by ear?

Hi, apologies for butting in here, If you can find a book by Morgan Llewellyn, titled "Red branch" it is a very good book detailing the life of cuchullain, though fiction much of it is based on the Táin Bó Cuailgne. a very good read too!
