it is the first time I see a sulphur mine. It is sad that people work under the worst conditions in Indonesia for a little money.

I wonder how many people who are gazing at how beautiful the photo is know exactly how dangerous this occupation is, and how many of the workers are badly mistreated. I remember discussing this in our photography class when we were covering the photographers' moral dilemma.

The conditions they're working in are madness, you're absolutely right. For the picture I was standing at the bottom of the mine (it's some kind of valley, with a small lake inside). I was visiting Kawah Ijen in a group, not difficult to get there, if you happen to be in Indonesia that is.

It's awful, can't really say anything more. If a company invests a (relatively) small amount their lives could be made a lot easier.

An amazing shot - this looks like hell on earth, a scene from science fiction. To see a lone human working in such an environment is incredible. The brilliance of the water from the bucket captured only adds to the marvel of the work.

the yellow sulfur and its vapor tells me that this is a place where I would not like to work. That people work there bare hand gives me shivers.

That's exactly what I though it would be like. Thanks for the link. It's a shame circumstances are that people work there without any protection. As always it must be some mix of 'always been that way', an over average good salary, not much option to work somewhere else, or options to change conditions. It's sad.
