Description This is a F-15 Eagle that flew at the airshow... And yes, that's water vapor off the wingtips. Near as I can tell it's from the speed of the wings hitting the air. I'm sure someone can explain it better than I.

That is really cool. My son says that's compression waves coming off the wings that turns the air white. I have no idea what that means, though.

It really kinda surprised me, as I didn't notice them looking through the viewfinder.
Thanks!

That's so nice! Were you in a plane to get that photo? Or just jumped too high?

I'm deathly afraid of heights! Well, unless I'm in a helicopter. Nope, on the ground.

The water vapor is formed when the wings are loaded up (high 'G' turns) under humid conditions. A pressure differential occurs that causes the rapid compression then decompression of the air causing the trails.
That is an excellent shot!!

I did this with a 200mm. Someday I'll get my 300, and do better!

You're probably right. Too bad they don't make a 200mm to 600mm zoom in the $150 range!

Nice Capture, Yes it water vapor. I'm told it happens when they are flying just below the speed of sound

TThealer56 In reply to tonysphotos [2008-08-29 21:15:50 +0000 UTC]

it has something to do with the air pressure over the wings.

Awesome capture !

Did you have to anticipate the F-15s position in the air. ?
I hope this is not a silly question.

TThealer56 In reply to dutchshun [2008-08-29 07:24:45 +0000 UTC]

Actually I had the camera set on continuous focus, and continuous shooting, so it was a bit like following it along and hope like hell!
