Description
Project: Interbellum
Role: Riflewoman, volunteer
Country: Rosalia
Faction: Alliance
After the catastrophic losses of the first years of the war and long mutilating grinders of a firmly rooted positional war, Rosalia’s army was drained of blood. The mobilization machine took more and more recruits, constantly reducing the demands, but this was barely enough. An endless stream of funerals, news from the front that seemingly grew worse by the day, and increasingly toughening martial laws and wartime measures did not contribute to an increase in the morale of both the populace back home or the soldiers on the front, which showed in both rising crime rates and low combat performance. Therefore, the volunteer movement received official support from the authorities and began a specialized propaganda campaign. War journalists were sent out to capture inspiring examples of heroism still left on the front, with elements of fabrication thrown in all done through the medium of the pioneering film industry.
Thus the famous poster and acclaimed silent film, "They shall not pass!" was created from a single still frame. The poster portrayed the legendary soldier Aro Godar during the Battle of Nudrev, where his volunteer-only Death Brigade was the lone surviving unit after a whole week of heavy shelling and defended its position for several days until reinforcements arrived. A heroic moment turned into a staggering tale of survival against the odds, the fortitude of the Rosalian soldier and the thwarting of doom imposed upon them by unrelenting, vicious enemies. A message of hope kindled in the darkness, presented to a war weary populace that at this point was starved of such a thing. After the film recruitment rates shot up, picking up in momentum despite the grinding loss of life that had ripped so many families apart back home.
Volunteers in Rosalia have the right to choose their role in the army and branch of service. The High Command generally preferred to assemble the volunteers into special units, which thanks to the recent efforts of the propaganda industry within Rosalia, had churned out steadfast and loyal soldiers who were thrown at the most bloody and nearly suicidal battles. Highly trained and equipped with some of the most innovative weapons the regime had to offer, where regular units suffered defeats and routs, the volunteers generally could be expected to hold their position. Volunteers often suffered heavy losses due to this stubborn defiance, yet at the same time they showed phenomenal fortitude and courage on the frontlines.
