Description I did this in the middle of the night last night, I don't know what happened but one idea led to another, until I ended up drawing 'nykur' from an very old Faroese song I learned in school. Legend says that the nykur lives in the water and he can change shape in order to lure innocent people to follow him into the water and trap them there. But if you call him by his right name 'nykur' he loses his power and flees back into the water. ...I find the nykur to be a fascinating creature

I imagined he walks out of the ocean there in the drawing on his way to find a victim(little Elsa)!

Just because I could I put the song here in the description along with a very very crappy translation I did!XD I'm no poet so no rhymes just the story!

1.
Nykurin læt sær klæði skera, / The nykur makes himself a costume,
- Harra mín - / - My Lord -
tí at hann vildi ein riddari vera. / Because he wants to be a knight.
- Um summarið, tær allir fuglar syngja væl. - / - In summer, when all birds sing beautifully -

2.
Nykurin gekk í kirkjuna inn, / The nykur walks into the church,
prestar hildu messur fimm. / Priests have five masses.

3.
Nykurin gongur á kirkjugólv, / The nykur walks on the church floor,
prestar hildu messur tólv. / Priests have twelve masses.

4.
Elsa lítla smílir undir lín: / Little Elsa smiles secretly:
"Krist gevi, tann riddari hann var mín!" / “Good Christ, I wish that knight was mine”

.............

5.
Han trådte over skamler en og to: / He walks past the benches one and two:
"Else lille, giv mig tro! / “Little Elsa be faithful to me!

6.
Else lille, troloves mig! / Little Elsa, become my fiancée!
otte borger giver jeg dig." / I'll give you eight castles.”

7.
Else lille rækker hånden fra sig: / Little Elsa lifts her hand :
"jeg giver dig tro og følger dig." / “I'll be faithful and follow you.”

8.
Der de komme i rosenslund, / When they reach the forest of the rose,
da lyster Else lille at hvile en stund. / Little Elsa wants to rest for a while.

9.
"Hør du, ridder, hvad jeg spør dig: / “Listen, knight, what I'll ask you:
hvor ere de borge, du lovede mig?" / where are the castles you promised me?”

..........

10.
Eitt er í vatni, annað er í sjógv, / “One is in the lake another in the ocean,
fært tú meg, tá hevur tú nógv." / If you have me you'll have a lot.”

11.
Elsa lítla lítur seg upp í fjøll: / Little Elsa gazes up in the mountains:
"eg meini, tú ert eitt nykartrøll." / “I think you are a nykur troll.”

12.
Nykurin leyp í vatnið út, / The nykur jumps into the water,
eftir stóð Elsa við sorg og sút. / Alone stood Elsa with grief.

13.
Nykurin leyp í vatnið kátur, / The nykur jumped in the water amused,
hálvur maður og hálvur bátur. / Half man and half boat.

14.
Skundaði hon so snarliga heim, / She hurried home as fast as she could,
hon takkaði Gudi, hon fekk ikki mein. / She thanked God she didn't get hurt.

In english this creature is called a nix or neck (and it probably has many other names). It is not particular to the folklore of the faroes, but the stories spread over most of the Nordic countries, England and Germany.

Myndin kundi eisini mint um ein víking, ið júst er komin í land eftir skipsbrot ella okkurt líknandi?

The more you know! I knew the nix is in Norwegian myths also, and I guessed that it was found in the other Nordic contries, but England and Germany too? Nice, it's wider spread than I thought! I doubt we have any mythical creatures that are only found in the Faroes..

Ja, tað ger tað faktist! Eg haldi ikki at hann líkist nakað serligt einum riddara, men nykurin sum riddara var nú tað eg fekk í høvdið tá eg teknaði hatta.

Himm, Rovarin, ert tú skóti?

I think we have a similar story in norwegian. It's called "nøkken". You have written in norwegian/danish too I see.

Anyway, to the drawing, I think it was very cool. He's sort of coming in on the beach from the waves, and he looks sort of sad. But he's very handsome. Was this after or before he almost tricked Elsa?

I have been wondering if there was a similar story in Scandinavia or Iceland. Cool now I know you have one Norway Yea, the middle part of the song is in gøtudanskt. In the past we had to talk danish in certain places like school and church, but the faroese weren't very good at it so it became gøtudanskt There is a lot of it in old songs and such.

Thanks I think the water looks weird This is before he meets Elsa, when he is walking out of the water!

Yes, actually, I think it's the same story. Nøkken, the Nøkk or the Nix is a river monster kidnapping children by turning into a pearly white horse and luring the kids. As the children grow in numbers on the horse's back, so does the horse. When he sees it fit, he dives back into his river and eats the children. I don't remember exactly, because it's been quite a while since I heard of him, but that's what I remember. He is portrayed as a monster, a horse or a young, handsome man playing the harp after what I remember. Check out a viable source if you're more interested.

Hmm, about the water. I see that it's sort of weird, but it's kind of hard to point it out. Maybe it's because the line which the wave starts is too straight? Waves have more irregular shape, almosst like a zigzag pattern, I think. And there should perhaps be more foam where it hits the water/beach. Reference is good. But on the other hand, I think the place where the water kind of meets Nykur's feet are very good. There's a shadow behind the feet, and that shows that it's transparent. I know how hard water is, because I've tried, and I even used a tutorial, (it didn't turn out THAT good: [link] ) but I don't think I should try to paint water AND something else at my skill level. :S

That sounds a lot like the Nykur! The Nykur can also turn into a horse and he lures kids! But I have never heard him being described as pearly white, though. But I think I'll look into it later when I have more free time.

Yea, i think you're right the wave is too straight, I have to remember that!
Yea, I have to practise drawing waves and foam! I think foam is very, very hard to draw, so i definatly need more practise on that one!

I used all my chemistry classes in Student on drawing glass, smoke and small amounts of water, and how it behaves around things, on the margins of my notes, that has helped

Foam is much easier to paint.

Aha, I see.

Hehe, I must practise
I spent some time the last few days watching waves, hopefully it will help
