Description The Hobbit or There and Back Again

Bilbo Baggin's peaceful life is disrupted by a sudden visit of Thorin Oakenshield, his group of twelve dwarves and Gandalf the Wizard, who has chosen Bilbo to be the burglar in Thorin Oakenshield's expedition. Thorin's plan is to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its vast treasure from the dragon Smaug. This expedition will lead them over the wilderness to Misty Mountains and beyond.

Drawing ink & graphite pencil work. As a part of my new year's promise to finally illustrate my version of The Hobbit. The announcement trailer of the movie was like an alarm for me, hehheh.

It's clear that contrast between trees, mountain & mist isn't the best one. Once again I made the error not planning to the end, as first two trees were fine but the rest made them look odd in my opinion.

Amazing!! Well done! I can't wait for the movie! The only casting I'm not sure about is Thorin and Fili. What do you think?

Tulikoura In reply to narutardednerd [2012-01-03 21:36:25 +0000 UTC]

I wait for the movies too, damn that release trailer was nice. Only year and then another year, sigh.

About casting... Can't say anything about actors themselves, other than it looks promising. Stephen Fry was a nice surprise as a master of Lake-Town. I would only complain about the "make-up" - Thorin, for example, looks far too young. I recall that he was described to have white hair and beard. And what's with the overall lack of beards! Blasphemy!

Thank you for the comment!

Lovely. Great job in detailing as always, especially those trees and those dwarfs... Love the feel that they're about to enter something wild and full of adventure. Great work!

Thank you! Drawing trees is fun in its own odd way, although it's really hard to balance contrast between trunk, leaves and branches + with other scenery.

Thank you! Good to hear your opinion - forest scenery + characters and creatures of many sizes really made this a tricky illustration so comments are always welcome.

Thank you! I usually love to add details here and there when it comes to characters and gear they're wearing, but with sceneries like forest, well... I have to be careful. In this work the contrast between two trees in front, background forest and mountain seems to be balanced enough.

The trees do look nice, and the three travelers below well done also, although Gandalf looks a tad short. But the scenery is well done.

Tulikoura In reply to JD-Kloosterman [2011-12-25 22:59:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the comment!

I agree with the size issue, I had a problem in this part. There were many creatures in different sizes in this illustration - hobbit, dwarf, man, pony, horse. I had to select a focus point and that was the difference between animals, as those were most visible. Gandalf and horse could be a bit bigger, I usually draw too small horses anyway.

Hehe, trees can be tricky to draw but it's fun in a own way. Trees that I draw tend to be oak-alder-maple mixes, though.

Tulikoura In reply to Meltintalle [2011-12-25 22:42:55 +0000 UTC]

Forest sceneries are my favourite but it's quite tricky to draw with this "medium". I usually end up to a complete mess as I cant figure out the "right" balance between contrast and objects.

Surprisingly I have found out that grass is harder to draw than trees, it requires much more planning and errors are more difficult to hide.
