Description
One of the seven Endless, inconceivably powerful beings, Death is both lord and personification of all death and life. She is well known for being the opposite of what most people think death is like; rather than being an ominous figure, she is a friend to all under her auspice.Younger sister of Destiny, older sister to Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delirium. It is said that everything living thing encounters death twice in their lifetime. Once when they are born, though no one remembers that meeting with her, and once when they die. Death does not guide the soul of the dead into any particular afterlife, she is merely a gateway into what lies beyond.

It's a bit of a joke I think, how all the antropomorphic personifications that make up the 7 siblings tend to be the exact opposite of what their name indicates. Destruction creates, Despair gives hope, Destiny makes choices, Dream is very much in the real world and Desire gives instead of takes (on occasion) and sometimes does not want. Death is really life by all accounts.

Yes, I guess that's how you can create a good character visually, or you give him great features similar to those you want to imbue your character or you give him/her the opposites.

She's slightly based on a girlfriend of one of the three creators. She was supposed to be a perky cheerful girl, as opposed to the gloom and doom that ussually accompanies death. One of them, Dam Keith, has the Maxx, one of his other creations, bitch about this image to no end.
Sam Keith seems to have always regretted working on the Sandman series...

I guess he must, I just feel kinda sad when a creator feels that way about one of his own characters.
