Well I always go to a few different places depending on what I need. I would avoid retail outlets and industrial stores just because the materials are usually raw, and or expensive. If you want a bunch of junk to mess around with and get ideas and stuff for little money then I usually go to flea markets first on account that people there usually sell things cheapest because it is junk for them and they want to get rid of it and every now and then there is some treasure to score. I also go to thrift shops because they have unique items but are usually more costly. I also sometimes go to garage/yard sales because sometimes people have good junk to sell there too for moderate prices.
You can also dumpster dive for thrown out items but it can be dangerous and also land you in trouble so I don't recommend it unless you know there is something good you wont get in trouble for digging around in. I scored brass parts off of old furniture and junk as well as leather cushion covers that are great for scrap leather to mess around with.
You never know where unless you look. Be creative and inventive. Hope this helps.

Dude, I'm just beginning in steampunk. And I'm looking to build a Steampunk Assassin type look. This looks really cool and I've no clue what the hell to use. Opinions and maybe a little help for the newbie?

What did you use to make the glow? What type of lighting. And where in the world did you get the circular piece with the numbers? I'm creating a steampunk costume and I'm finding it difficult to find supplies lol If you could maybe point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated ^^

Well now most of these questions are easy to answer. For starters the lighting I used is an LED system I tore out of a freebie at a convention and stuck it into a sundial compass which is what that brass thing you we wondering is. Now for more interesting discussion...
Lets start with what your going for first. First, who are you and what do you do? What are you wearing, whats your equipment and accessories and the like?
Now you might be wondering what I am all about but its who you are that defines what you have and depending on what you have and are going for I will tell you what you might need and where to get it, because I am not like other people, I don't (most times impossible) get my supplies form where everybody else does but I know where they get theirs because costumes vary.

I'm going to be a steampunk time traveller. My two main accessories will be a device on my back and then a gauntlet that the device is connected to. Thanks for the info, i've got a good idea on how I'm going to create my costume. =]

Hmm, device on ya back I see... Time travelers are always fun. Well I would look around flee markets or thrift stores for a good wooden wall clock as your base. You might like some barometers and maybe some pressure gauges to add to it. Connect a gauge to some welders hose fittings that attach to the hose that may go over your shoulder, down your arm and connect to your arm. barometers are easy to find everywhere. pressure gauges look at thrift stores or even better are flea markets because most don't work but its ok so they are cheap, never pay more or even $5 each, you can find nice brass ones, just look.
Attach some used belts to base and make it into a back suspension system. Gauntlets are my specialty (look around I have more versions of those than anything else) Let me know what your going specific for that and I an help you.

Well what do you use for the base? Like how'd you make the base of your gaunlet? I was thinking pressure gauges and stuff too. Just don't know how to go about creating the actual gauntlet to rig the stuff to.. Also I had planned for my gaunlet to look like a control panel of some sort. I want it to be obvious that it controls the device on my back lol And I was thinking that too but unfortunately i'm in fresno california and there are not any flea markets around here lol I'll have to try looking for thrift stores.

I make my gauntlets from scratch really. If you want to look for leather gloves on the cheap try wal-mart. they sell plain leather work gloves for around $9 and you can dye them any shade of color. As for the bracer well I cut that out of a piece of leather so its hard unless you buy the leather for it but if you want I can instruct you on how to make something similar out of pieces you will be able to find and work with if you dont want to go through ordering leather and supplies.

What kind of leather? Cuz from the pictures it looks like its a dense sturdy kinda leather lol I'm probably just gonna shop around and hopefully get lucky =]

tungstenwolf In reply to Mikiru-Atsuki [2011-01-13 00:11:34 +0000 UTC]

Lets see if your not going to order leather or visit a leather shop then I might suggest going for the gold and find the equivalent or so and look for some thick old leather that can come from tool bags or pouches and such or an old leather case. Or even motorcycle or horse equipment too. I am sure you will know when the thickness is the right amount. Look for those things. Also made a good template before you cut away at the leather.

I'll be sure to look for stuff like that. Thanks for the help. =] You and I are alike xD Unlike many other people, you try to help out when people ask questions. The usual response I get it "Figure it out yourself!" lol

You see I used to be like that to a point. What people may not want to share or help is because they fear losing what they have, fear of loosing what makes them good to someone who may be better than them. I don't have this. Still I only help people who will go the distance. You see I am sad in a way and am very tired of seeing people who think gears and goggles is what makes steampunk. I am tired of seeing people who make themselves seem so great when they have accomplished so little. Tired of spray painted goggles and glued on lock washers to everything. I am not jealous of their fame and I don't want much of it myself. All I want to see is a little quality from people, to stop cutting corners and go the distance to be great. That is the thing with me. If people are willing to do this for themselves I am more than willing to help them out in any way.

Exactly lol most steam punk cosplays I see aren't very creative. But I strive to create something really amazing. Like the stuff you have, although it will probably be a while before I'm that good. But who knows, maybe I'll surprise even myself lol we'll have to see what I can cook up between now and summer time. =-]

tungstenwolf In reply to dreamscapegoat [2010-02-21 06:13:12 +0000 UTC]

Well I can tell time and find north pretty well, except in the dark but thats what the light is for. As for the "secret" little power it has the abilitly, once I turn the power conduit on of course lol, to navigate me toward areas with a time/space rift occuring so I can do some neat stuff.

Duuuude. That's rediculously impressive! I like the lighting on it. You really need to get a better picture of it, though

No place close, though I could give it better lighting, but it was a quick shot with dim lighting anyway, lol.
