Description pencil 2007,
Finnish Sturmgeschütz 40 G assault gun in July 1944. The one portrayed here is Ps. 531-6, nicknamed "Liisa".

Finnish Army purchased StuG 40 Ausf.G's and StuG III Ausf. G's from Germany in 1943 and 1944, during the latter part of the Continuation War. They were used against the Soviet Union in the great battles of summer 1944. These destroyed at least 87 enemy tanks for a loss of only 8 StuGs.
Finns called StuGs with a nickname "Sturmi".

Wonderful sketch! I like the realistic addition of logs strapped to the sides to provide additional protection.

Back in 2006, I visited the Patton Tank Museum in Louisville Kentucky. They had a rusty STUG III there, that they recently acquired in a trade with the Russians. In the 1990's, the Russians wanted to create a new park outside St. Petersburg. The land was swampy. They were draining it, and found about a dozen INTACT German armoured vehicles! When they interviewed several WWII veterans, they learned how they came to be there.  After the Red Army broke the siege of Leningrad, and began pushing the Germans back, the Germans tried to counter-attack during the winter. Red Army gunners were defending a long ridge overlooking a broad, snow-covered "field" A German column arrived, spread out and began to cross this "field". The Russian commander chuckled, and told his men to hold their fire. "Just watch this!" he said. The German tanks were actually crossing the SWAMP, and soon enough, they began to sink! The crews bailed out and ran, while the Russians laughed! When the snows melted, all the tanks were sunken into the peat, and forgotten. Until the 1990's!

The Finns, after the Poles, were in a very dis-advantaged position in WWII. Invaded by Stalin, they got no help from the Western powers, yet ended up on the Axis side to simply defend themselves against the Russians!

What kind of paper did you draw this on?
Great details and setting.
I've recently become a fan of German assualt guns.
Seeing them adapted to Finnish tactics can only make them more interesting. :]

Thank you... StuG III was in use, yes, but didn't see as much action as StuG 40's did, maybe they weren't in actual combat at all. Here's a great site if you're interested >link<

Kiitti vaununjohtajalla on joko verikauha tosi ylhäällä tai se tähystää sieraimillaan (ns. haistaa vihollisen).
