Salla
The Finnish troops of "Lapin Ryhmä", the Lapland Group managed to stop the Soviet advance just east of Kemijärvi in Pelkosenniemi and Joutsijärvi.
As the pressure on other fronts like in the Karelian Isthmus, increased the Finnish troops were needed where ever they could be spared. In Märkäjärvi they were replaced with the Swedish, Norwegian and Danish volunteers of SFK, Svenska Frivilligkåren in February 28th 1940.

I just started painting with acrylics seriously. We should really have a painting/art night some day. Rather soon. I'll buy the beers, foods, snacks and equipment if you can bring yourself along. What are you doing at weekends? Work?
We have this nice cottage at Hämeenkoski where I have been hiding all the weekends. It's perfect for calming and painting and there's also history of war. There's a punaisten joukkohauta (whatever that is in english just outside our yard beneath a great cliff. You should definately visit and you can bring your girlfriend with you.

This is official invitation. Hope you don't miss this. Että semmosta

Thank you very much for the invitation!

I'm seeing a raiding detachment setting up a snap ambush on some Russians huddled around some fires for warmth here. This is going to be devastating; I see an M/31 and what looks to be a Maxim on a M/Salakari mount. Might be something else; perhaps an L-26. My eyes might be tired of their camouflage might be really quite good.

They are all ment to be m/31's but that's ok One quite astonishing thing remains that most Soviet soldiers were afraid of the forests and stayed on the roads, even when they were ambushed. There was one reason why motti tactics actually worked. Later on troops from other parts of Soviet Union were deployed to fight the Finns, like hunters from Siberia who were more suitable for forest fighting.

Yes, and the NKVD established special counter-reconnaissance teams to hunt down the long range patrollers the Finns deployed. Reportedly these were very effective units, and came as quite a shock: the Russians, prior to that, had not fought particularly hard against them and then suddenly they're being hunted like poro by ninja Saami equivalents.

The Finns fought well in the forests. I'd love to learn some of their tactics and techniques. The Russians were noted for fighting tenaciously in forests against the Wehrmacht, but I guess during the Winter War they deployed guys who'd never seen more than three trees standing together in their lives.

Not sure if there are many "special tactics", just where you are used to fight.

I'm talking about the fight down on the platoon, squad, and fireteam level. Fighting in the forest, especially primeval forest like most of what Finland has, is a different experience to fighting in tank-friendly ground. How does one use the PKM in the forest to support a section attack? How does a squad handle a meeting engagement with a Russian squad? And so on. That's the sort of thing I'm talking about, right on down to "How do Finnish troops build shelters in the forest and how do Finnish soldiers patrol in the forest: What techniques do they have that I could incorporate into my repertoire" is basically what I'm driving at there.
