Yep, they are. At the start of the start of the story, Ranul attempts to steal back his memories of the Crystalids taken during the surgery... as they can now be a physical "object".
Etinfini catchs him and they get into a huge fight, thus making Ranul run away at a young age to Earth... where he avoid Etinifni for the majority of his life.

Yeah, at the beginning they fight after Ranul tried taking off with his memories of the Crystalid race.
Thus making Ranul run away to Earth and spend most of his time as far away from Etinifni. D:
