The contrast between the warm light at the bottom and the looming dark silhouette at the top is unnerving. My reaction is "Oh, how pretty," followed by "yikes... what's that big dark thing?" Beautiful brushwork. A great painting!

The building darkens as it rises, then the lit windows set it off. Although I think it could also work without the windows lit.
