New headcannon! As a heads up for anyone who's interested, I'm planning a new batch of shipping adoptable which should go up Monday or Tuesday. It will be mane six x a selection of background characters, including these two!

So. I really wanted to make Vinyl Scratch part bat pony. She's at least second or third generation, but she still displays a number of bat pony traits, like tufted ears, fangs, and slit pupils. A few less common things that she also displays are a line of fur down her back, solid hooves instead of more typical unicorn cloven ones, and a short, spiral-less horn. But there are two things an particular that really affect how she lives her life.

First, her eyes are unusually light sensitive. She has good night vision, but bright lights or direct sunlight hurt if she isn't wearing protection of some sort. On top of that, some ponies are unnerved by her slit pupils. Hiding her eyes, even indoors or at night, helps make other ponies more comfortable.

Second, and much, much more important, is her voice. Possibly because of some quirk of her ancestry, or just because of some other underlying condition, Vinyl is mute. She can produce a range of sounds, but she doesn't have the fine control over her voice box necessary to form most words.

One sound that she can produce, quite well in fact, is the sharp, high pitched chirp that some bat ponies use to echolocate. Even among bat pony colonies, not every individual can do this. Some cant produce the sound, and others can, but cant hear or process the return echo's properly. Vinyl can do both, and is quite good at it.

Octavia is from one of the rare, old, well off families of earth pony that have lived in Canterlot for generations. Canterlot has traditionally been a unicorn city, and it's been hard for earth ponies and pegasi to get a hoofhold there. Those who do, and who do well, are well respected.
