Description “But will the bad guys let him do it…”

Fun fact! I didn't know Ales Mansay is running around and committing those vile schemes barefoot until when I looked up references to draw this picture! Now I'm not sure what to think. Why are you like this, buddy.

More Rayman stuff! I really wanted to draw this because I don't think I've seen anyone draw Ales Mansay do this. Maybe someone has, it's not exactly the most clever idea, but man, I just wanted to draw it out.

I’m actually really sad they never made a callback like this in Origins or Legends, especially considering who happens to narrate that opening cutscene in the first Rayman. Rayman Origins just in general is both a really great game and a game that just makes me a little frustrated writing-wise because the game itself could've done so much more with the whole Mr. Dark fanboy angle they gave The Magician. It's mostly me grouching that a game I'd give an A isn't an A+, but still. The stuff they showed while the game was in production was so cool (RIP Ales Mansay's dorky little Mr. Dark outfit he fashioned himself) and it's a real shame that technically they don't SAY things like The Magician's name and why he's frustrated with the Bubble Dreamer and it's all backstory that you have to find off the wiki.

And I wouldn't exactly call Ales Mansay my favorite Rayman villain (that would be the robot pirates), but he's incredibly fun. Kinda wish they brought up the fact that he and Betilla used to be tight buddies during those Educational PC game days, but then again, Rayman isn't exactly a series that bothers with things like "continuity" and "lore", especially when they made a perfectly good in-game excuse as to why things change by creating a god that can just change the world with a mood.

Speaking of which, I wonder if he has that one nephew that sends him recipes for chocolate cake in another language as a Teensie...

Ales, you gotta wear some shoes, buddy. you're gonna step on something gross or sharp and it'll ruin your day.

He runs barefoot in a level made out of sticky food and I just cringe just thinking about it. Ales, what are you doing. This is disgusting.

Yeah. Ubisoft should use dialogue in the Reveal scene, instead of just voice grunting and hand swiping. Also that Ubisoft claimed in Rayman Origins website that Magician is Mr. Dark don't really help. But, i like Ales.

I feel like that scene would've made a lot more sense if they had dialogue. Any sort of dialogue at all.

But yes, I do like Ales. I just wish they told his story a lot better because it's just confusing more than anything else.

I love Ales too. I just wish he got just a little bit more backstory than what he actually got. 8U Can't believe they cut out a lot of his dialogue from Origins. The NERVE...

quite the awesome drawing!

i personally see Ales Many and the original Rayman 1 Magician as 2 separate entities. i don't want to accept that they're the same person-- especially since they're both completely different creatures (humanoid limbless and Teensie), and i don't find Ales Mansay to be as fun as the Magician, for as short as he may appear in the original Rayman. doesn't take away that the giant flying steampunk fort is pretty awesome, heck, i'd love to explore such an area in a new 3d Rayman game (rather than Evil Twin: Cyprien's Chronicles), though.

Yeah, the whole "this little Teensie is the same guy as the limbless man in Rayman 1" is a bit of a hard pill to swallow, especially when the game that introduces this new character design is also the game where The Magician betrays everyone and is secretly a huge fan of Mr. Dark when he sounds pretty disgusted by him in the first game.

I feel if they were bringing back this character, they should've either just kept him as a Ray-person while having him create this evil steampunk fortress in the sky (because that would've been pretty cool), or they should've brought him back as a Teensie but he ISN'T evil, at least for Origins. The whole "well here's this teensie oh wait he's evil" happened a bit too quickly especially without the story that was cut from the game. Have him be just the cheery guy that records your progress with the Lums in Origins...and THEN twist the knife and have him be evil in Legends. That's just my take.

Plus I will admit I'm a bit bummed that they never had Betilla and The Magician interact in Rayman Origins considering how they were supposedly best friends if the Rayman Junior games are to be taken as canon.

it sure is. that's another reason why i see them as completely different entities.

i would've liked a mix of both (or only the second option)- as in, having a Teensie Lum Chronicler or something like that that would still keep count of the Lum score, but would still be revealed as a villain, with as the player makes progress in the game the worlds will have more and more mechanical lum-powered steampunk-like enemies and parts in the worlds, showing his power growing as you bring him more Lums without knowing of his true nature. the idea of such a character (merchant, lum score counter) turning out to be the evil mastermind behind it all is something i have only seen once before, in a game called Henry Hatsworth, where the merchant used all of the money you gave him to buy parts for a giant robot to fight as the final boss. And if the story was made more interesting i think i would like Ales Mansay more. still wouldn't explain why there are SO MANY YELLOW LUMS in the game or convince me that the Bubble Dreamer is the same guy as Polokus.

i'm honestly not too disappointed about that: for as fun and good as Rayman origins is of a platformer and how wondrous the worlds are, i personally don't see it as a canon part in the Rayman series.
again, doesn't take away that they're fantastic games! or at least Origins. haven't played Legends or the iOS games in that style.

Just like his hero! Or villain, I should say.

I wish the modern Rayman games focused more on story like the original trilogy. I love the new games, but the story is nothing in both those games. I want a narrative to really invest me in this wonderful world! Instead you have to search up other material like instruction guides, the wiki, and even other games to really figure out what the Livid Dead is going on!

They had so much potential for an interesting antagonist in Ales, but they just screwed it up. He has a good design and his flying mechanical castle kicks ass, but that's not enough. That's why I write fan fiction, to make sense of the Rayman timeline and lore, and to add depth to the world. My backstory for Ales is that Mister Dark used to be the Guardian of Dreams, and Ales looked up to him as a hero. When Dark turned evil, Ales still admired him and even toke some of his magical influences directly from him. And in order to learn dark magic, he had to turn himself into a Teensie and had to change his identity. He still secretly misses Betilla, and even wishes to be a Rayian again. But is too consumed by dark magic to go back...

But that's just my silly fan canon.

It's sad because the story in Rayman Origins used to be good...before they cut out a lot of the dialogue prior to release. I think supposedly they did it to create more of a flow in gameplay, but you just end up feeling...confused about everything. The twist is fun but would've had more of an impact if you knew just what Mansay's deal was or even that his name IS Ales Mansay. Because they certainly don't say his name in any official stuff. You don't even know he's going by The Magician unless you read the manual.
And Rayman Legends tells its story by having a text balloon pop up and make vague references to "the nightmares". What nightmares. What's going on in Rayman Legends. I guess Ales is now a bunch of himself? He cloned? Dark Teensies? I...okay.
Still a fun game though even though I had no idea why I was doing the things I was doing.

I have some theories on how The Magician became a Teensie. One was that he just misread a spell and didn't know Teensy Spell meant a species change spell. Whoops. Another is that since they're connected to the light and all, Raymanians can't exactly practice dark magic unless if they're born of dark magic themselves, so the more he pursued the dark arts, the more he...lost his way.

That or they're two people and the Rayman 1 Magician is going to come back from some vacation and be like "Hiya folks! What did I miss?"

I know! They wasted an incredible story for no reason! I hate it when a great story is ignored or forgotten. Rayman is the most confusing, inconsistent franchise I've ever encountered. It's impossible to make sense out of anything! If the game could just explain SOME details and plot elements instead of either ignoring them or mentioning them in the instruction booklet, maybe it be less jarring, but no! Rayman has such an amazing story and lore that they just never use! It's so aggravating sometimes!

Also, I like your theory too. Similar to my own!

(Also fun fact, the name Ales Mansay is Pig Latin for "Salesman".)
